haven't been that surprised. but wife surprised me when she said she wants to run trains with me.
She hasn't shocked me yet, but she has goosed me.
I hope my future wife will like to play with the trains!! That's one of the things I'll be looking for when the time is right!
Yes, she shocked me the day we were at a trainshow together and she bought me two scale steam locomotives, one of them a Williams "Challenger"; the other, Lionel's C&O "Allegheny." I was stunned.
When she started haggling w/ the vendor, I left the scene for the men's room, thinking he was going to not even entertain the idea of giving her a price break (I hate haggling prices.) When I returned to the scene of the negotiations, the locomotives were mine at a lower price than what was posted.
She told me afterward that if he had not moved in price(s) she'd have walked away, too.
What a doll I am blessed with (and certainly not just 'cause she buys me stuff) !!!!!

There's the Challenger on the right...
...and the Allegheny on the left...

She has been to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with me (3) times. You have to admire that never say never in someone you have been with for 42 years.
This day 2006. Yes it snowed, in Arizona, April, we could have done this in Pennsylvania.
Same day. Note the coordinated designer hiking gear.
It had warmed a good bit by the time we reached the river.
Cook your own dinner dear.
when id got back into trains, the wife helped me buy a prr t1 duplex...new never been built bowser ho..id didnt have the money to buy it now on ebay..but the wife did..
My wife suprised me when she rode the zip line 800' over West Virginia's
New River.
I believe we guy types sometimes do not realize the all the magic our wives can bring to the table because we, OK me/I, have a tendency to take things for granted and live too small. That was one beautiful trip in a great state.

Almost every day for 34 years, today. Sometimes good, sometimes bad....

She found me my copy of "Titan of the Timbers" at a railroadiana show years ago!
Shocked, no. But in every way supportive of our O-Gauge Trains, a big yes.
Shocked? Oh yeah! A few years ago, she created a profile on here to buy the MTH gold millennium NYC set from the buy/sell forum. That was a great Christmas present. Since then, she has surprised me with lots of train related gifts, and has a big hand in layout changes/planning and anything involving painting on the layout...that's the one thing I don't enjoy. She is also in to my other hobby (Jeeps) and is on the lookout for an old one to restore with me.
In 35 years together, she has done hundreds of things that have shocked me. However, very few have been train related (that Atlas Conrail diesel two birthdays ago was one). She is not into the trains but is 100% supportive of my hobby, as I fully support what she likes to do. This has worked well.

Going on 45 years she has on many occasions. The one that jumps out is in 1995 she hired a professional instructor to teach her how to ride my brand new Harley Davidson fatboy. That one was a shocker. I ended up buying another Harley.
some people are sharing way too much information on here.-jim
Some pretty good ones by static electricity in the house and once in the middle of the night, when not knowing that both of us were up at the same time. She approched me in the darkness, of the house, and I can honestly say that is the one and only time I could feel the skin on my back shudder. Never had that feeling since.
Yes. A few years back she went to my LHS and on her own bought me the Santa Fe set with passengers cars.
Yes, I was replacing a ceiling fan light without turning off the circuit breaker. She entered the room and flipped the light switch.
What, me worry?
My wife has never operated the trains on her own. However, on Christmas morning back in 1999 she had Santa leave me under the tree a set of Lionel Madison Cars (Legends of Lionel) talk about surprised. These cars look great behind a Hudson or GG1. Great way to start any Christmas morning, toy trains under the tree.
Many thanks,

A few year ago while on my way home.On 85 north out of charoltte n.c.I heared some motorcyles next to me.It turn out to be a husband and wife.On 2 big harleys his and hers. Now I don,t know that much about bikes. But I can tell if its a harley they have a sound of their own.I was so suprised I rolled doen my window and yelled"HEY NICE BIKES!"They both said "THANKS!"Then we parted ways they went on northward I got 485 contuned own my way home.
Yes indeed, my good wife has shocked me. One Christmas comes to mind. It was during a time when one of my collecting goals was to obtain a streamlined Warbonnet diesel in each of the scales. She surprised me with both an Aristo-Craft large scale and a Marklin Z-scale model.
Guys I like to say that you are all blessed. And although she may not know a sd40 from a e8.But you still click together.I have read stories were the wife paints the back drop.Or build towns and make trees. And sometime buy train for you.Or buy herself a locomotives to run on the layout. As I stated before you guys are really blessed.
Two years ago when in West Virgina, I suggested that we Kayak down the rapids of the New River . My wife said yes and we set off on a 9 mile trip. To my surprise she made it.
She also supports my train hobby as she like to see me happy. I in-turn support her activities too. Been married 10 years and my wife still likes me!
Yes. She surprised me with an MTH Hudson for Christmas 14 years ago. It was my first engine since the 1950s. She didn't know diddly about trains but had heard me say I always wanted a Hudson. She went to the local hobby shop and asked about getting me a Lionel Hudson. They told her there weren't any but there was this new company called MTH and they had two on order. She made a down payment on it hoping she had done the right thing, worrying that it wasn't a Lionel. I hadn't heard of MTH then either, but when I opened this heavy present she set in my lap and got a look at it, I almost cried. It was beautiful. Still one of my favorite engines. I had it upgraded to PS2 when that became available and went into DCS.

When shopping for our new home she told the realtor she would not even look at a home if it was not a ranch with a full length, 8' tall basement. Took a long time but we got one.
Yes, when she asked on our 2nd anniversary in 2001 if wanted to go to a train show.. Now I am the show registrar and she is the chief badge seperator and envelope stuffer.. reminds me time to plan a date night.
