hello brand new here and need some help. Sorry In advance for posting this in the wrong place. Still trying to learn the ropes.

anyway here is my issue.

i bought a brand new mth proto 2 NYC Mohawk today. I got it home in boxed it, in raveled the plastics and what not put it on the track hooked everything up. Turned my transformer power on and the engine came to life. Making noise. Chatter and I can blow the whistle and bell. I press direction and it won't move. It makes A mechanical CLICK sound and cuts the protosound off and then the sounds kick back on but no movement. After consulting the manual, I factory rest it and nothing.... then I thought it might be in a lockdown state of some kind... I did the button commands for that....nothing I have no idea what's going on it's literally brand new never run. Please help! Thank you!

This seems like an older engine - put 12 volts to the track and let it sit for 15 minutes. Charge the battery. p.14 of the manual.

Could be the button press is too quick - press and pause then release. If no joy...

Check page 9 of the manual for the button reset sequence or the button sequence to remove from a locked direction state.

Is it 30-1165-1?

There is a cure for V V S.

If this is a PS2 engine, it apparently needs to have its rechargeable battery recharged or replaced.

To charge the battery, leave it on the tracks with 12 volts or so of power and let it sit until, when you turn off track power, it keeps making sounds for 6-7 seconds. If, after charging for several hours it does not do this, the battery should be replaced.

If you provide us with the engine's MTH model number (XX-XXXX-1), we can tell you exactly what kind of battery you need. The model number is on the end flap of engine's box.

 Although new to you this engine has been around since 2000... The battery will need replacing for sure .  It's probably one of the  early white ones...  .. You could try a 9 volt alkaline for testing but don't leave it in the engine.(it's probably in the tender)

Proto-2 engines require a good battery to leave neutral and have any resets stick. Yep a BCR is good as well.

 Nice  solid engine  made strictly  for 3 rail.

There is a sound there that is not normal. It may have issues.

Needless to say, the battery is in the tender. It is easy to swap. To test you can use any 9v battery.

in the future, always have a battery backup as well as a 9v charger. When buying any older unit always replace b4 use with a good fully charges battery. Especially a Ps 1 unit as those you will scramble the board,

  I agree with Michael Hokkanen, replace the old battery with a new BCR, make sure you get the correct one.  Let the BCR charge up for about 5 minutes and then activate your engine.  If you do not have one, purchase Barry's DCS O Gauge Companion book and do some reading, eventually you will want a DCS unit also, to run your engines with remote control.  Living 50 miles away from a train/hobby store is a bummer.

As for the button press for the direction change. I held it do for a good 2 seconds multiple times and nothing 

I live one hour away from English's Model Railroad in Montoursville, PA and one hour and fifteen minutes away from Gryzbowski's up by Scranton, PA. They are both worth the trip however.
