You will need the remote or a wiu.
I have the proto sound 2.0 TIU and the controller. But will that TIU allow me to run any MTH engine? I am a Lionel legacy guy so how does the proto sound stuff work
You can run any PS2/PS3. PS1 is conventional
Do you have any idea when the new PS3 system will come out? I have an opportunity to return the PS2 TIU and rather wait to spend the 600$ if the new one is close

The TIU and matching remote is the whole package, you're good to go.

Fingers crossed, the new WTIU will be out in April of 2023, and the Lionel BASE 3 will hit the shelves in late 2023.
If it says Protosound 2 on the TIU, it is an older unit. I recommend returning it since it is likely that you will have problems with it down the road. Rev L is the newest version until the WTIU gets released. You'll have to use a smartphone or tablet to run it unless you want to buy the DCS remote separately and tether the remote to the WTIU. I like the physical remote, personally.
One note, the new MTH TIU doesn't have a remote (a current remote can work with it). If you want to work with a remote, rather than using an App from a phone or tablet, you should stay with the TIU you have. The remote is no longer available by itself and MTH hasn't indicated a clear yes they would ever produce a new one.
On the other hand, if you are okay with using an app, I would seriously think of getting the new TIU, especially if you don't know how old the TIU you bought is. Downside is it is possible that the new TIU will be delayed, but hopefully it will show up in April).
