How about the exact model number?
There are two volume levels, the legacy manual is not very clear on this.
Have you tried this:
Vol^,VOL^,VOL^,VOL^..........to raise main volume.
AUX1-VOL^, AUX1-VOL^,AUX1-VOL^....... for background sounds.
You must press AUX1 each time before VOL^ in order to raise the background sounds.
Try putting the tender on the track without the locomotive. Do you get idle sounds that stay on at that point? If not, there's something internal to the tender.
Also start with the easy stuff, clean the track and loco/tender pickup rollers.
Newer legacy stuff is especially sensative to dirty track/pickiup rollers.
Problem solved. Mystery remains. I took the tender apart today because in my opinion the sound in and out was like something was loose. Anyway, I didn't find any obvious culprits. I smelled the wires etc to see if anything melted. Nothing. I moved all the wires around and pushed all the connections in. Nothing seemed to move. Nevertheless, after re-assembly everything works like new. Thanks for the input.
