RUN FOR THE HILLS WHILE YOU HAVE A CHANCE !

My girl friend  (now my Wife ! BIG MISTAKE )  back in 97  tried telling me to get rid of my dog & cat  !   I said NO  ! GOOD Bye !

A month later  she changed her mind !   Both pets  lived their full lives with me !

She tried to limit my spending on trains & computers  !   AGAIN NO  !  She is welcome to divorce me !   Any time  !  I am still waiting !

I agree completely. I love her but come on. You still have to be your own man. I not saying be a jerk, but grow a pair. I understand there are priorities, but you worked for it too. I'd never live that way.

Boy, then I must have the greatest wife in the world. I tell her what I buy, how much it costs and or what I want to spend. No secrets here. All I get is a "okay honey, no problem, you deserve it". And even though I'm running out of room to store this stuff, she still says "You can store some of it in my closet, if you need too". Gotta Love her!

Look her right in the eye and say"FOR BETTER OR WHORSE!!You do recall that don,t you?!

Seriously, all this train stuff is my wife's fault.  A 671 set, 51 switcher, four 022 switches, some track and a ZW were all safely packed away as my most prized possession.  So one night in 1983 she wants to get them out and see them run.  I had never seen a catalog before and no idea Lionel had made anything other than my train.  So to get more track we went to a hobby store in Dallas and saw their postwar inventory and my, my, my the flood gates opened.

Now I just let the grandson justify new stuff.   She just sighs and looks the other way.

It's just money, and after looking at the auction catalogs, I don't think anyone has taken their trains with them.

"That ship has sailed"?  Sounds like a good excuse to buy a sailboat!

A newly-built Herreshoff 12 like mine (ours is 31yeard old) will set you back $50K+.  Then you've got your yard bill, yacht club membership dues, mooring fee, trailer registration, and probably a half gallon of Epifanes varnish, brush thinner, sand paper, bottom paint (pushing $200/gallon)... I keep the marine wholesalers on speed dial.

Those trains are now considered a harmless little hobby!

Its all about perspective!

IME there is truth to be told on both sides with wives who fight you every step of the way and guys who have no restraint.  An elevated example  of the nesting desire that females have in maintaining household order and the acquisition / accumulation male drive.

Guys who lack restraint need spouses speaking reality.  The goal being balance and harmony.   Opinion

When I see threads like this, I cannot tell whether the posters are serious or joking.

I have met people whose collecting habits (including model railroading) caused friction in the home, even to the point of divorce. Once I was seated at a table at a reception with the ex-wife of a train enthusiast.  When she found out I was into trains, things got a little cold.

I've been doing trains for almost fifty years now. My wife knew about them when we were dating. She is not into the trains, but she is very supportive of my hobby.
I've never used credit to buy trains or spent money on them that needed to be spent elsewhere.

You gotta be living in some kind of alternate universe or something!

And as CW stated, which I forgot to state, I like him have never used credit or money destined for the family to buy trains. I've put off buying a lot of trains due to family responsibilities and my wife knows that, it's just the way it is. While I love the hobby, my wife and daughter come first and know that, then the house, the dog and then way down the list me. Which is why nobody minds when I go off on a spending spree every once in a while.

Jon I'm/was a power boater and know all too well the joy and pain of owning a boat and belonging to a private marina.  As they say  "the two happiest days in a boat owners life is the day he buys a boat and the day he sells it."  Well I sold the boat  now I just have to sell my slip.  Bottom line - MORE TRAIN MONEY.

I knew a fellow on Long Island who use to sneak the trains into his home. sometimes he would keep them at a friends home till things cooled down at home.  My wife of 52 years is my life's partner. I don't lie or sneak trains in , I also never used funds that were earmarked for the family budget.

she knows what I have and what it cost, and is supportive of my hobby.

ITS A HOBBY IT SHOULD NOT BE AN ADDICTION!!

YES I AM A LUCKY FELLOW.
