Hello all,

I am new to the forum and to these products.  This is probably a novice question, but I can use your help none the less.   I have a Lionel 263E with ProtoSound 2 and Synchronized Puffing Protosmoke system.  I purchased the MTH smoke oil and put 15 drops (more or less) into the smoke stack / opening.  There is a smaller opening inside of the nickel plated stack and I assume that I am to drop the oil carefully down that opening.  Is that correct?  Next, I have read that there is an on / off switch on the engine beneath the rear truck (holding engine upside down).  I can find no such switch on this engine.  On the tender, there are 2 potentiometers.  One is not marked but I assume that controls volume of sound.  The other is labeled "smoke".  I tried turning it all the way clockwise.  Nothing changed.  So all the way counter clockwise.  Nothing.  Set it in the middle, nothing.  Could it be there is an on / off switch elsewhere on the unit?  Did I not put the smoke oil in the right place?  Help!  Thanks.  Newbie.

Thank you.  The engine had been purchased as new, however the box had been opened and the manual was not with it.  I filled with smoke oil based on the info I read on-line (15 or so drops) after purchasing MTH smoke oil from my local dealer.  This didn't work.  However, after it sitting overnight, I added another 10 or so drops thinking the wick may have been totally dried out.  I had not run the engine more than a few laps around a small loop so I guessed the wick wasn't burned.  It is not working terrific.  Thank you for responses.  R.
