I have a Lionel UP F-3 powered unit PN 6-24552

The powered unit motors are not working in time

the lead motor in the cab gets extremely hot, the motor with the Odyssey board is not turning as fast and seems to have a rougher time turning at slow speed. A few laps around the layout and the lead motor gets extremely hot.

I opened up the truck frames and lightly oiled the gears and applied a small amount of grease. Both gear units seem to turn freely.

No binding. When I turn the motor on the rear it is tougher to spin and a small squeak is present at the top of the shaft/housing. A small drop of oil with a needle applicator did not help.

Do these motors have bushings in them? How do I replace the motor if its bad? This motor has the magnet, and odyssey board on it which is unavailable at Lionel.

I would remove the bad motor and verify the drag is in the motor and not the geartrain. If so it may be that a motor magnet came loose from the frame and the motor is junk. If the correct Odyssey motor is NLA you could use the motor used for the other truck and install an ERR Cruise M. Not a cheap fix but you will have an engine that runs better than before.

Thanks Pete for the reply;

Magnet is firmly attached. I don't have a spare part motor with a magnet and odyssey board, unfortunately it seems these are in short supply. Maybe I can ship this unit to somebody for repair? The Cruise commander would be a great upgrade but again I don't believe you get a new motor with the kit.

J, the magnet I am referring to is one of the permanent magnets in the motor housing. They are held in with glue. Not usually a problem but they are known to come loose and when they do they drag on the armature. Not saying that is what is wrong with yours but the only way to make sure is to separate the motor from the mount.
