Hi All,
I have an extra MTH transformer 50 watt that I'd love to use for accessories such as lighting. It says that it puts out 18 volts. Is there an inexpensive way to step that down to say 12 volts? Or even better make it a variable output.

I've always wondered if you have to match the controllers to the bricks? Like, could you use the small Z500 controller with larger bricks? Would that cause damage to it?
I have the Z-Controller instructions in front of me and is reads;"this unit was designed to operate with Z-1000, Z-750, and Z500 Hobby Transformer Power Units.
If you decide on eBay modules or the diode-dropping approach, for less than $1 shipped you might want to pick up a coax-to-screw-terminal adapter - makes it easy to access the two AC wires from an MTH brick.

That was more like what I was thinking. However, only looked in catalog, never thought to look up the manual online...doh... I would think it would be much easier for them to make them all the same then make 2 or 3 different ones.

Mike, wow that's a great offer. Let me give it some thought and I'll get back to you next week. Do you think our 50watt brick would power my son's MTH pacific with a string of passenger cars? I might consider using it for his line, and our cw-80 for switches and layout lighting. Thoughts? Thanks.
