For anyone in Europe who is looking for a good 18v power supply, I thought that I would mention the Conrad BV01 150VA transformer.

I'm using a bank of these to power my TPC units, and they are both high quality, and good value for money.

They have both 9v and 18v taps, and besides a thermal overload cut-out, they have an extremely fast acting circuit breaker for short-circuit protection.

I've fitted all of mine with the Lionel power adaptor lead, which provides an additional fused connection and the correct plug for fitting a TPC cable, power master or direct lock-on.

To ensure correct phasing, I remove the euro 2-pin connector and fit a UK 3-pin plug. That way I can use 2 of them in a TPC-300 without having to worry if the plug is in the right way around.

They appear to be visually the same as those available from Weissmann, but at a considerably lower cost.  You can get them direct from the Conrad web-shop (UK, FR, NL and DE.) and the cost of the 150VA model is under £100 with free shipping. (Note: on the UK website the picture for the BV01 shows the BV03 70VA model, but they look the same.)

I hope that this may be of some help. I have no connection with Conrad, apart from being a happy customer.

Hi Dave,

I'm currently in Holland, and a TPC is a Lionel TMCC Track Power Controller, available in 300W and 400W versions. I use them under Legacy control as they have the additional benefit of allowing me to run conventional locomotives with my Legacy remote if I wish to.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mario,

Here's a link to the transformer page for the UK.  The 150VA model is the BV01/122 model.

For the German site, WWW.CONRAD.COM will give you the German site in English.

For France and Holland, just substitute .Fr or .NL for the .COM.

I've found them to be a great place to find electronic odds and ends as well as components. Although their websites can be confusing, and it sometimes takes patience to find something obscure.

Thanks Nicole, yes, a Lionel product, until now, I've only used DCS, but I have a new Legacy system still boxed up. I now recall seeing the TPC in a diagram and couldn't work it out, and I just found the TPC info on line. I'm pleased you highlighted this, it's a neat item, I didn't realize you could do this with the Legacy system. (control conventional locos). And, the specs say it accepts 50-60hz, this is why I've basically avoided Lionel control until now, after being badly frustrated with the old CW80 transformers.

Dear all,

I'm happy if this has been of some help.

Lafondue, Yes, Conrad sell a lot of great stuff. I originally found these transformers when I was looking for an extra power supply for my LGB. Then I realised that they were perfect for use with my O gauge trains too.

Dave. The TPC is a very useful item indeed. As you will have read, it gives you access to many Protosound 2 features too, although I can't confirm this as I don't have any MTH locomotives.  Lionel have realised that the 50Hz world exists, and many of the more recent products work very nicely on 50Hz power. Although I do make a point of checking the manual for everything before I buy it. Even the CW-80's work nicely on 50Hz these days.
