I saw in the 2017 Lionel catalog that they will be offering a PS-1 boxcar in their LionScale line.  I am assuming that this will be based on the Weaver offering that they acquired.  It made me wonder how the four manufacturers' compare.  My gut feel is that in descending order of fidelity it would be Atlas O, Lionel, MTH and then Weaver.

I am hoping that this thread would generate some qualitative comparisons.

I can only comment on the Atlas O double door PS-1s versus the Lionel PS-1s.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the stirrup steps on the Lionel are die cast, and not plastic like the Atlas O.  Well, at least they started off plastic, they're mostly cyanoacrylate now.

I love me some PS-1s.

Sorry guys!  I didn't clearly state what I wanted to know.  I wanted to know how true to scale and the quality of the details.  Things like cast-on handgrabs, ladders, etc. vs add-on; see through walks;, underbody details, etc.  Also, how easy they are to convert to Kadees.

I'm thinking of ordering the LionScale NYC boxcars.  I'm still researching their chosen paint scheme and not sure it was ever on the PS-1.

Thanks,

Jan

The entire Lionel PS, 50’ DD & X series cars are the best out there incorporating the latest technology. They are accurate and rugged providing trouble free daily operations. At least they contain crisp reliable details and rivets, interior box loads and doors that open. They are also weighted properly for 2 or 3r.

I’ve taken hundreds apart and they are designed and built well. The only equivalent cars out there would be the latest design by MTH, 50’ PS-1’s and their outside braced / sheathed style cars.

The only thing missing on Lionel’s are the air hoses. In my opinion, they are the best choice for operators and well worth the price. Now if we could get some combo door and 50’ PD cars from these guys, it would complete their line-up.

If you're going to compare the models against the prototype, look at the doors while you're at it.

A number of different doors were offered to RRs, model manufacturers often don't supply the correct doors (very noticeable) with the correct roadname.  Atlas most likely has doors you can swap out (with Atlas cars) but they don't necessarily fit on other brands.

The new lionscale PS1s are old weaver molds, so they wont have the fine detail. I have about 15 Lionel scale PS1s, and about 10 Atlas Trainman ones.

I prefer the lionel ones myself, best on the market in my opinion. The Atlas Trainman ones are very nice as well, they are true PS1 cars. The Atlas 40ft boxcars are built to the AAR prototype.
