It takes a little motivation but this is exactly what you do. Take off the back of the battery compartment and remove batteries. you will see a small phillips scew. Remove that screw. Now take a small thin bladed screw driver(flat) and in the middel of one side you will need to pry the top and bottom apart then work your way around It will pop off easily and then you will be inside the unit where the wheel is at, The rubbber key pad may come out but don't worry its easy to put back in place before you close it back up. Ive had the secondary board come loose inside and had to do this to push the board back into the pin holes. Take your time and be patient. Once you do this , you can do it forever.Good luck
Can you actually buy the part to replace the thumbwheel on the remote?

Yes you can and you get the newer style with bigger ribs in it. I haven't done it but a friend did.

BG-5000000 $16. You can actually squeeze the lower half in the middle to release the tabs. Take some getting use to, but some can even do it with one hand. Sort of a magic trick. If difficult, I start at the port at the bottom of the remote.
Pay attention to how the thumb wheel is installed and wires routed as you take it a part. G
Thanks, I have one remote that the thumbwheel is somewhat spastic, so I'd like to try a replacement.
My thumbwheel braket things broke two years ago. I placed door foam in behind the bracket as posted here. No glue yet. It has worked better than new since.
The hardest part of replacing the thumbwheel is taking the remote apart! Also make sure you put things back in in the proper order and orientation.
