LGB made trains the way toy trains should be made.  The quality was unsurpassed in the years when LGB was the king of mass production Large Scale in this country and abroad.

Back when I was with Kalmbach, it was generally agreed among the staff that LGB and Marklin--both made primarily in Germany at the time--ranked as the overall best made consumer market model trains, regardless of scale.

I still have a nice collection of LGB locomotives and rolling stock, most of which is still new-in-box or in display cases because I don't have much space for running Large Scale, aside from a layout in my garage.  I have one of each of the U.S.-style trolleys they made, which is kind of the highlight of my modest collection.  All of those have significantly increased in value now that they are no longer made or readily available.

No, they are not completely gone and some items are now being made by Marklin, which now owns the LGB trademark.  However, production is just a fraction of what it once was and I don't think many of the items are actually being made in Germany.  I have not purchased any "new" LGB in there past few years, so can't comment on quality, or lack thereof.

The LGB catalogs used to be the finest quality catalogs offered by any manufacturer.  They were BIG (like the trains themselves) in terms of page count and page size.
