Not counting the loop around the Christmas Tree with my original Lionel Super "O" Set, I had two different layouts during the Postwar Era.

The first layout was a simple "oval loop" on a 5' x 9' table that my father built for me.   Later, we added two Lionel remote control switch tracks that I received as birthday gifts.

The second layout was built on two, 5' x 9' tables.  The tables were constructed in an "L" shape, also built by my father.  I never expected to have such a large layout, but my father purchased the track for a very substantial discount in the early 1960's from a hardware store that no longer planned to carry model trains.  I thoroughly enjoyed running the trains on this large layout by myself, and with my friends, for several years.

I never had a permanent O gauge layout when growing up. In fact, my first actual O gauge layout, did not get built until about 8 years ago. That was when I started a Lionel layout "for my grandson"! As a kid, we never had room for a layout at home. So, Mom and Dad let be bring out the trains every year at Thanksgiving, and I could leave them up until New Years day. I was allowed to take over the dining room for a "Carpet Central" layout. sometimes I was allowed to even run a branch into the living room. After marriage and kids, the trains only came out for Christmas, around the tree. I did get to model in HO an O scale, as I have belonged to several different MRR clubs over the past 50 years or so. I also have had a couple of small 2-rail O scale switching layouts over the years. Am now planning a large Lionel layout in the "new" basement at our retirement house. My wife gets the main floor, but I get the basement!

My dad built me a basement L-shaped train table using two 4x8 sheets of 3/4-inch plywood in 1960. I painted it green and painted roads then attached the 027 track and four switches directly to the plywood. It was noisy as heck but it didn't bother my parents upstairs. Great memories. I'm back to a single 4x8 now just for kid fun at age 72.

One. Got it Xmas morning 1955. 4X8 or 4X6 - I forget; my father built it; it resided in the dining room. My mother did not object. 0-27; 4 switches. 1 passing siding and 2 spurs. Got the train set, too. 2055 ATSF-style Hudson, etc.

Never had an around the tree train; my layout was "open all year", too.
