I finally found a source for Homasote in Utah after it's been unavailable for 3+ years. I needed a few more sheets and the substitute soundboard I was using sucks

I picked it up last night and it was almost $30.00 per 4x8x1/2 sheet. I was wondering how much do you that live in an area that is it more available pay for it?

If you compare the price of Homosote (that is just compressed cardboard) at $30 a sheet you can buy sturdy 5 ply 1/2" or 15/32"  (one side finished)plywood for that price. If you are concerned about noise, rubber or cork roadbed lowers the sound level on plywood but track on Homosote really deadens the noise. The quietest might be track on foam board/insulation board though.

I used that VinylBed road bed, glued to the 3/4" plywood. Then glued the Atlas O track to the vinyl stuff. It is SUPER quiet! Where we needed to screw the track down, after the glue dried, I then removed all the screws.

Also my choice, Atlas-O track on Flexxbed road bed. Very quiet.

A couple years ago I found only one place here in the Kansas City area that has Homasote and as I recall it was up around $38 per 4'x8'x1/2" sheet, but that sounds too high from everyone else's pricing? Maybe it was $32? Anyway I ended up not using it. A few Home Depot's that I called around here said they did not carry it.

Eight years ago it was over $40 a sheet here in NW Florid,a and I had to travel 100 miles to get it.  Last year when I was in Pittsburgh I got 4 sheets at HD for just over $28 [er sheet.  I cut it into 4' x 4' pieces to fit in the back of my SUV for its 1000 mile trip to the house.

Chris, I secured the fastrack to the 2" foam using Hollow Door & Drywall anchors:

with the track set up, I poked a hole through the fastrack into foam.   Then after removing the track, I added a few drops of Gorrila Glue to each hole in the foam.   Then screwed in the anchors.    After a couple hours of drying time, I screwed the fastrack down using 1 1/4" #6 Flat Head Philips screws.

I works great, is very secure, the track can be unscrewed and removed, and screwed back into the same anchors many times.

Same technique used for the Cisco RR in the current issue of OGR.

Last time I checked here in the southeastern portion of PA, Home Depot was selling Homasote for $27/each for a 4x8 sheet.

So when I build my new multi-gauge layout which is combination of Standard Gauge and O-Gauge, I decided on Vinylbed glued to 3/4" plywood.  Gargraves track (and Ross turnouts) will be used for both gauges.  I'm in the process of selling all my Atlas-O track in Mint and Like-New condition, since I'd like the Standard Gauge and O-Gauge track to have the same look-and-feel.

"Down South" here in Ft. Lauderdale, it is very difficult to find either Homasote or extruded styrofoam insulation at any price. The last lumberyard I knew that carried it closed up a few years ago. And as for gas price, it ranges from $2.75 a gallon up. It's been many years since it was Anywhere near the $2/gallon quoted in this thread!

The Lundberg Survey is based on responses from more than 5,000 service stations nationwide.

On Friday, drivers in St. Louis, Missouri, paid the least at the pump -- $1.61 -- while drivers in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Anchorage, Alaska, paid the most, at $2.81.

Here are average prices in other cities:

• Detroit, Michigan -- $1.76

• Houston, Texas -- $1.78

• Atlanta, Georgia -- $1.88

• Boston, Massachusetts -- $2.01

• Chicago, Illinois -- $2.10

It appears it’s the cheapest to haul it home… if you live in Houston.

They are always quite high on the pre-cut 4'x8' sheet goods. Better to buy a whole sheet and have them cut it to your required sizes for free. That's what they (and I) do here anyway. Our HD's in this area don't carry Homasote, at least that's what they told me a couple years ago.

Which Friday? Kansas City is usually pretty low and it's only been down to about the $2.30's around here, and that's the lowest we've seen in quite some time?

I decided to go to my local Home Depot today to see what kind of materials are available for sound insulation for benchwork sub base. It turns out they still carry a tan-colored, 1/2" thick fiber-board- $10 for a 4 x 8 sheet. I've used this material before, and while it may or may not be as good as Homasote, the price is right. Add cork roadbed and it should deaden sound enough.
