I was wondering what is the best way to hook up my lionel legacy system and dcs system on the layout i am building. Can i hook up the legacy system to the dcs system and still have full function of both remotes and use same power source which is an Mth z4000 or do i have to keep them seperate all together, I want to have full control of both systems and would like to run both lionel and mth trains on the same track.

They all play nice together. My Z4000s (2 of them) are connected to the TUI which is connected to the tracks. My Legacy base is connected to the common rail of each of the 4 channels of the output side of the TIU. No problems at all.
so all i have to do is hook the common up from legacy to the output of the tiu? Is that the fixed channels also? I am pretty new at this,
Yes, connect the Legacy common to each of the 4 output channels. It really is that simple.
great thanks
On the other hand, I have two TIU's feeding 48 track blocks, each of which track block can be independently turned ON-OFF. My Legacy base is connected at only one point to one of the outside rails, and that is it!
Each of my TIU's is centrally located within the track blocks each serves in order to keep the wires as short as possible. The Legacy base is connected to the track at the control center, which is no where close to either of the TIU's.
And by the way, the Legacy and TMCC engines run just fine.

Alex is correct, for Legacy or TMCC, all the outside rails should be common. A connection anywhere to the outside rail should do the trick, and it always has for me.
When connecting to the TIU commons, make sure you're connection on the output side of the TIU.
