I have a vintage 1954 Lionel set & would like to improve the sound capabilities of it. Is there a way to do this (for a novice)?

Dumb question, exactly what do you have? What sound does it have now, and what's the budget to improve it?
gunrunnerjohn has a point. Is it a diesel or steamer? What sound does it have now - none beyond whistle and bell? What does "improve" mean to you.
There easiest way to add chuffing to a 1954 steamer would be to buy a Railsounds tender and run behind it . . .
In 1954 all you had for sound was a door buzzer for a horn and air whistle for steam, not counting the growl from the F units or track noise in general It's not too hard to improve on that, it only cost money
Lighten up guys, the man has been a forum member for eight years, and this is, as near as I can see, his first ever question, and in the body of the question he stated he is a novice! No need to scare anybody away with "dumb question".
Actually, my reference was to my question, not his. Just looking for information. Sorry if it was taken the wrong way.
