Being totally new to O Scale and still learning, trying to figure out where to build layout, etc. and wife thinks other projects should be completed before jumping totally into O scale, I want to display on an 8' shelf, my custom painted Iowa Hawkeye Express train (once a real operating train) knowing it will be months if not a years before my track is running. I have nothing at all for O Scale other than MTH F40PH Diesel w/ DCS Proto-Sound 2.0 and MTH Metro Bi-level Passenger cars (which match the real train). I want to display with the lights and sounds operational until the tracks are ready. Remember, I have nothing to start with so I am looking at the cheapeast way to get it functional, for display only, needing power supply along with what else may be need, etc., to maybe show it off using Ipad or Iphone. When the complete track project is further along, I will aquire a more powerfull, upgraded, complete electrical system with power supply, DCS controls and everything needed to run a layout. Thankyou for some suggestions, what I should aquire and maybe wiring instructions on how to best complete this display.

If you want a static display, you can perhaps do something like I've done with a product demo display for the York Train Meet.  I have a steam locomotive on a short section of track.  So that I can have it look natural and have the wheels rotating, I suspend it about 1/16" above the track with some well positioned screws holding it up.  Everything works, you have chuffing sounds & smoke, lights, etc.
