With Leapin Larry’s Kline Hudson coming to a close, I thought I’d share the upcoming builds going on at Harmon. Some are mine, some belong to fellas on the forum, I’ll do my best to hopefully keep them in order and give a brief description on what’s going on with them, if I get out of order, I’m sure you guys and gals can put two & two together, and of course, any questions, just ask,...I’ll answer as best I can,....there’s no particular order on what’s what, so where they show up on this post isn’t the order they’re being worked on,.....this is just a collection of what’s happening in the shops,...first up is Chris Moody’s 3rd rail Super Hudson, ....my buddy Chris landed a Super Hudson shell only off the bay, so he tasked me to build him a fine model,....under the Super’s boiler sports a MTH chassis, large Pittman, and a Lionel PT tender, all IR equipped,....fan smoke & the works!....this one is actually on the verge of completion as well, but since I’ve learned how to make the proper looking rod bolts from master builder Pete ( Norton ) Chris has asked that these be added in place of the standard hex head bolts,.....next up, a never done in 3 rail Mohawk class L2d ( early ) this locomotive is built with a Lionel L3a class boiler, and a L2a drive block. Note the custom rod bolts on this critter,....those are the OE rod bolts center drilled & tapped for 2mm studs, to really convey the look of a castle nut and stud ( which is how they really were) also note the correct appearing headlight reflector, lens and bulb assembly,.....I believe Pete had mentioned 3rd rail was going to build one, but the plans fell through??....so here’s a pretty accurate one!..I’ve also removed the Worthington feed water and installed the correct Elesco parts, grafting them all in with plumbing as close as I could get,....after that, we have another J1 in the works, this time, an accurate rendition of 5221 with correct mixed drivers,....this loco is still in mock up & development, hence all the crazy colors, and lack of paint.....she’s still awaits a tender too,....next up is a brass KTM IHB 0-8-0 .....never seen one in 3 rail, and I’ve always wanted one, so under went a MTH chassis, and very carefully 3 railed the engine under the tender ( first tender truck) .....this loco is actually operational ( testing with a rectifier) and awaits some tweaks before going to paint & electronics,....and the final pics, which should be the first pic is Larry Mullen’s 773 in for a Pittman swap, .....he’s next up to bat, Larry’s 773 is through mock up, and testing and is ready for electronics,.....phewwwww!?..y’all get all that??.....cool stuff coming in 2021!........some of y’all might recall the accurate J1e 5344 in her final days, ( not pictured ) she awaits correction on the cab & tender numbers that need to be changed from railroad Roman, to railroad gothic,...then that one can get electronics,....

IHB with booster truck is awesome! How cool will that be...

And it’s functioning Mike,....what a bear that was!...I had to machine a set of Lionel freight car wheels to work in that truck!....The Lionel wheels had to be counterbored a certain depth, and then threaded as the KTM axle that holds the rods on is threaded, then getting it all back in time was another challenge!...now it’s 3 railed, and very robust!...

More excellent things I love to see. 😁
Wow! Awesome work Pat!
All I can say is, you are a very busy Master Model Builder, Thank You for all of your hard work. I look forward to seeing the finished product, K-Line J1e NYC Hudson. It’s very exciting. Thank you very much. Happy Railroading Everyone
I pity the moron who volunteered to DCS that IHB 0-8-0.......
The work you do is Just unbelievable!

Thanks fellas,....appreciate the kind comments!...sure wish I could devote full days to this stuff, but I’m still bound to a 40 hr job, .....not too terrible far off from full retirement, then I can concentrate on railroad stuff all day long!......at least with the model trains, the tools are lighter, the environment is better, and the work is so much cleaner!....I hate being so dirty at the end of the day!..😁

That L2d made from the L2a running gear and L3a boiler...I have/had/maybe some tentative plans for an L2d myself. The 2933 preserved in St Louis was my goal. I have the L3a running chassis and tender (very similar to the 2933's tender), and I was planning to use an early Williams J3 Hudson brass boiler from the 1980's for the superstructure. I have one. Similar to the L2d's boiler, it would require cutting and lengthening forward of the firebox (the brass helps and I have cut a boiler or two), and a re-arrangement of some of the domes and so forth (again, the brass construction helps). The Hudson's firebox is a bit larger than the Mohawk's, as in real life, but I think that it would go unnoticed.
But, that Elesco'ed Lionel L3 boiler looks very good...hmm. If I had one.
Ever getting to it is a whole 'nuther subject. My "eyes have become bigger than my stomach".
Good job, as usual.

Do you know of a motor mount from MTH the sets the motor back further from the drive?
I set up my MTH GN S2 engine with a motor mount I borrowed from another MTH engine. I looked in the parts list from MTH and that mount is used in several models. I contacted Midge originally, and she said she had no parts list for that S2 of mine.
Anyways the motor hits the boiler. I could cut my boiler to fit around it. The flywheel would show though.
The original dogbone was 9/16"+ longer than the one I made. It should have been a clue that this motor needed to go back further. I also so a post saying to that effect.
I spent a good part of last night looking thru Lionel's pages and did not see a mount I need. So I may make a custom one of my own. Have you run into this?
Have you tried turning the mount around or bending it down slightly? Sometimes that works wonders.

All the time,....do you have enough tongue on the mount’s base to scoot it back, mark, drill & tap new screw holes?.....that’s usually what I do,.....I think between Pete, Lou, & myself, we’ve come up with a “universal donor” mount that can be persuaded to work on just about any MTH big steam,.....pretty sure it’s the Lionel A class motor mount, but I’ll ask Lou, I think he’s the one that actually found it,......he doesn’t do anything all day anyways!....😆😆😆

@Engineer-Joe posted:Thanks.
The frame has a designated spot for the mount to be placed. There's a ridge preventing it from sliding back. So the mount has to be formed around that ridge like a step and then set back another 9/16"+.
That chassis notch should be where the motor sits. Flywheel should sit just behind the suspension springs molded into the chassis. All my Premier Northern chassis (UP FEF, SP GS class, ATSF 2900 class) used the same mount. It's identical to the one used in a Premier NYC J class Hudson. What did you pull the motor mount from?

The Lionel one that "kinda" works is part # 6208011110. It was used in the early (MTH copy) Allegheny. It needs tweaking and a hole drilled at times but it does work. Not as good as the MTH J1 Hudson mount though.
@Engineer-Joe posted:not available. and if the picture is correct, doesn't look like it would solve the issue here.
Lionel Train Replacement Parts, O Gauge Model Trains from Lionel Trains (lionelsupport.com)
I must have bought the last ones. They are in my parts bin.....

Ok no worries, ....let’s look at it from another approach,.....pop out the motor, leave the motor mount attached to the frame and post up a pic,....let’s see what you’re cooking with,,..
Pat
@Engineer-Joe posted:I slid the flywheel back on and that may cloud the issue. The motor is farther back then needed but it shows what I mean here. I may order a Lionel mount, cut it, and weld in a piece to get the spacing needed. I may just bend some metal and see how that goes?
This mount and flywheel should go back into the donor engine anyways. I may use the motor Pat sent, as it's shorter.
I have a feeling that MTH either used much smaller stuff here? I'd need to see inside of their released version to see what mount it has.
Joe, ....I have that exact same engine I bought as a painted production sample,....it’s missing the motor and mount as well,.....if you’d like, I can make one for you & me at the same time,.....I’ve done this with Lou countless times,....sometimes we have to make a custom driveshaft, but that’s just a matter of some 7/32” ID brass tubing and some JB Weld ( I use panel bonder but that’s hard to get over the counter in small quantities) .......we can do it over on a new thread, and others can watch us figure this thing out together,......up to you,...lemme know,.....
Pat
I think the motor mount might be the same as the GN 4-6-6-4 or a 2-8-8-2
I saw a mount that looked correct and now I can't find that one. They didn't have it anyways.
Here it is

So back on topic, I've followed your posts and the work you do is the work of a master craftsman. It takes a lot of patience and thought to be able to see what you want to do, plan ahead for the hurdles that you will need to overcome and then produce the end product. I gather this is no easy feat along with a regular job and all of life's other interruptions. You could call yourself a "Model Engineer" but this term does not really describe what it is that you do. This is not something that can be "taught" so to speak, it really is an art, some people have it and some people don't. You are one of those people that "have it" and that puts you in a certain class of your own. Excellent work my friend!

Yeap! Looks like there's bearings inside instead of bushings? I'm hoping for good performance.
I wanted to shove this in the new MTH Big Boy.
I cleaned up and deleted posts above. Let me know what else to delete here including this!

Ohhhh yeah,....big angry bearings!...darn things are the size of a dime!....way overkill, but that’s how I build things,.....I don’t use a shovel to kill a snake, ....I’ll touch off a small nuclear device!..😉...here’s one of those motors apart!..
