I received my first order of turnouts from Brad the other day, so I now will be able to start with the first part of my layout. The drawing and the photo give some idea what I’m doing for the start.

To take a photo of the two curved turnouts that make up this part of the layout, I had to take the photo from the second floor of my house to get it to fit into the picture. The outside curve is an 80” radius and the two switch points are 72” radius curves. The fourth line comes off a #8 turnout. This makes the one entrance to my yard area.

I  been going back & forth from HO to O for about 1 year now. After 30 years there,it takes getting used to O scale. Still not sure I can make the grade because my HO sales have to fund my O scale.

I've got a 25'x40' area available to me with a furnace, water fixtures&other fixtures to dodge. How much area will you have to work with? My area seems somewhat small for O scale, while other times it seems just right.

Your using Signature Switches,am I correct?

Glad to see someone moving ahead that knows for sure what he's going to do,referring to what scale he's definitely going to be modeling in.

Happy railroading!

My area is 23x47 and I have 380 ft of mainline and about 1000 feet total of track.    I used 52 inch minimum radius on my mainline and #6 switches throughout.    These are compromises, but they work for me.    I can run my pennsy steamers which include 4-8-2 and 2-10-2 locos.    And I have a fleet of GGD 80 ft passenger cars that handle the curves just fine.

So I think you could do something in 25x40 also.    You might have to avoid duplex locos and maybe big articulateds.

My track plan is twice around the perimeter (grade separated) and connected through a peninsula up the middle.    It is all single track with 3 major passing sidings.

Al:

I have only a 24'x32" area to work with in my basement, plus I still need room for my other side hobbies that I have. I guess you can call what I'm building a shelf layout. I wanted to keep my curves on the main line at 72". Plus, I was able to obtain a "Right of Way" through the basement closet which made all the difference.

I can build a turnout, I have even built some as Girder Rail for street cars, but I can't even come close to the work that Brad Strong does.

I can't build turnouts-this is my worst pitfall in O scale. Plus there seems to be the fact that O scale is centered from the '30s into the '50s & I'm '90-present.

On my 40'+ shelf I can have 5 tracks, that if I ever build a layout in O,should serve as a hefty yard & 2 Mainlines.
