Greetings Everyone,

So, today was my lucky day!   The MTH 50-1001 DCS Remote Control Set that I won (You Know Where) arrived and it was better than expected!   With the exception of the box being a little rough, the TIU and Remote, for all intent and purpose, were Brand New.   I didn't think to ask what "Revision" the TIU was before I bid,  (I know, I know, I'll do better the next time) so when I removed the TIU from the box I immediately looked for the "Rev." sticker, however, there wasn't one.   Heck, the instructional video was a VHS tape!   I thought for sure I was hosed.   Well, I figured at the very least I could use the Remote if the TIU was DOA.  Here's the "Lucky Day" part.   I plugged the newly purchased TIU into my test track and fired it up.  It worked like a charm!   Next, I decided I'd try the up-grade to v5.0 and both the TIU and Remote up-graded on the first try!   So now I basically have a Brand New TIU and Remote running v5.0 and my total out of pocket expense was.......wait for it..........$101.00 shipped to my door!   Now, can anyone tell me what Rev. I have?   Any help will be appreciated.

You have an original Rev. G from about 2002-2003.

Thanks Barry,  Are there any precautions, other than the commonly implemented fail safes, that I should be aware of?  Currently I am using a Z4000 for power.  As Dave C. suggested the Rev. G may not be equipped with internal fuses.  I do not plan to use this TIU as my primary source for layout control as it was purchased to be used as a Back-Up if that becomes necessary sometime down the road.

Not sure when they stopped putting the VHS tape in. I know my first one came with the tape when DCS was new to the market. I'm not really up on all the versions. I just purchased 2 new ones. My previous 3 were all different models. The very first versions if you pop the cover off. Weren't equipped with fuses.

Thank you for the reply!

Not really. Just be sure to have a 10-amp fast-blow fuse in the Hot wire between the transformer output and the TIU's channel input for each channel that you're using.

Also note that unmodified (by MTH) Rev. G TIUs are considerably more prone to failure than any of the later models. In addition to not having internal fuses, they had lighter traces and lacked the later DCS signal generator protection of all subsequent TIU models.

Further, unlike later TIUs, the Rev. G had all of its Common wires connected internally. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, however, it is a difference of which you should be aware.

Barry,

Thank you again for your time and responses.   I truly appreciate the valuable information pertaining to the Rev. G TIU.
