I’ve never been a fan of the huge, monstrous size of the Lionel 154 highway signal.  So I got bored today and took an MTH 154 and an ancient smaller Lionel railroad crossing sign and combined the two.  The MTH flasher’s circuit board is going to have to reside under the train table now.  Next up is some paint work.  I think it came out pretty well.  Below is a size comparison.  MTH on the left and my creation on the right:

I like what you did. As a Hi-Railer who does like a "tinplate garnish" here and there, I approached your idea with 3 PW American Flyer crossing signals. re-painted in less toy-like colors. Too big for S (and O, really), they fit pretty well in the 3RO world. They are operational. This was last Summer, before the track re-ballasting was done.

The Lionel and Marx signals had one thing over the AF: the AF bulbs are on the same circuit, so the two do not blink independently. Oh, well.

Thanks guys for the compliments.  D500,  I almost did the same thing as you and got some American flyer signals, but I didn’t feel like converting the lights to a dual circuit.  Plus I already had the MTH signals and Lionel 45 gateman signs laying around.  I like the height I ended up with, they’re still toylike, but don’t dominate the layout.  Plus they fit in pretty good with the 46 crossing gates.  The MTH 154 flasher circuit boards have been installed in small plastics boxes and are attached with Velcro under the table.
