@bkm,
I typed "Blue Comet 833" into the 'Search' box on the MTH website and got this (I added the yellow highlighting afterward):

Does this particular model (20-3028-1) appear to be the one you have?

The problem here is, you need to know or provide more info because MTH made several runs of Blue Comet and the number 833. I see a wired tether between the engine and tender and I think that is the 4 pin tether?
That would make this early QSI or PS1. If it is a 10 pin connector (2 rows of 5 pins) then that could be the next higher control system, Locosound or PS2. PS3 uses a different drawbar and no tether so we know it is not PS3. Another indicator would be on the bottom side of the tender, there might be a little oval sticker indicating the control system features.
I'm also having trouble trying to differentiate if your is Premier Scale sized or the Railking from the single picture alone.
I would be ideal to have these 3 characteristics:
Length of engine and tender, Tether pins- 4 or 10, and any sticker ID from the bottom of the tender (Locosound, PS2), and maybe even a good picture of the bottom of the tender and any switches or charging sockets.
MTH made a ton of these making it a little harder to nail this down to an exact model. It is possible to figure it out, but again, sorry, from one picture is not enough I can figure this one out exactly.

FWIW, I think Mike nailed it and might be that 20-3028-1 making it a PS1 early version.
FWIW, there was a 20-3028-1 for sale at the Columbia show yesterday that someone snagged for $175 or less (if they negotiated) before I could get it. It had a box, so it's just a coincidence to see someone post about getting one sans box and any identifying info the very next day after having just nearly bought one the day before. Again, just an interesting coincidence to just have seen that model in the box yesterday.
Four pin.
Hi if it's a 4-pin connector it is a ps 1 Proto sound engine! I have the exact engine
if it is a premier then i agree with Vernon 20-3028-1 ps 1 proto sound!
