I don't have photos to post yet but in my observations of stock O scale KTM steam locomotives I usually see a larger simple two-pronged connector from the engine to a two hole receiver on the tender.

I've come across one that has an interesting finer multi-prong connector hidden inside the coal stoker/auger from the tender that "pushes" into a receiver on the engine.  The drawbar from the engine is then screwed in place with a screw through the drawbar into a hole on the tender where usually there is just a metal peg which would fit into the drawbar hole. This connects the two together and provides the tension holding the electrical connection together.  I haven't even yet considered how this impacts the operational radius and I don't believe this is stock in any way.

I'm curious if this is a "one-off" by a very clever and detailed owner/modeler or if it's indicative of someone's style who has done many customized locomotives.

From your description, I would say, it's a custom installation.  Max Gray/KTM used individual plugs/receptacles, USH/KTM used two different styles (early vs. late) of 2 prong plugs/receptacles, Westside used the later 2 prong and a small phone type (single plug/receptacle w/multi conductors).

Yes, a photo would help.
