I have a couple other topics out there about diesel detail parts and stripping and repainting a diesel.  That project has opened up my eyes to a whole other aspect of this hobby, detailing.  I admit that I do not have the train knowledge that some of the others here do, so at the risk of sounding stupid, I have repeatedly hesitated asking certain questions.  Through some of you and other places, I've recently learned what stanchions are and that the cylinders on trucks, are brake cylinders.  This information may be a given for some, but not for all.

So, for people like me who do not know specific parts of diesels, steamers, rolling stock, etc., maybe here in this thread we could put some helpful diagrams together?

For instance, I am looking to get some detail parts for the GP38-2 I’m working on.  I have the Precision Scale Co. detail parts book, but do not know the specific parts I will need.

What are these on the front?  MU Junctions?  Whats the red one?

*Note: I know this may seem like a dumb idea to some, but I think it will be helpful

          information.

The green circle and the red circle show the large diameter "MU Jumper cable", and most railroads now have e receptacle for each end of the cable, in order to protect the head with the 27 point plug end. Thus one of those receptacles is actually a dummy, just to retain the "loose" unused end.
