i've been trying to locate an illusive MPC era Diner car to complete my AMTRAK sets so far no luck beginning to think none exist

Haven't seen any myself...then again I haven't been looking for any of the O-27 Amtrak coaches/sets since more accurate models started coming out.
It may help if you edit your thread title to "Looking for the elusive MPC/LTI Amtrak 027 diner"(since the aluminum diner is more well-known). The initial title doesn't make it obvious to a casual browser that you're looking for one.
Also, try re-posting your request in our "Wanted to Buy" forum. Some of the people with stuff to sell may limit their browsing to that particular sub-forum and would miss a request posted in the main 3-rail forum.

Does anyone know if this car existed or was it cancelled?
I've got the dinner, combo and bag. Not for sale! It was made.
The issue could also be this was the first O-27 diner for Amtrak, so peoplw were getting it for sets started with the 1977 LAKE SHORE LTD.
oh it most certainly does exist ,but its a very hard critter to locate at least for a reasonable price . most times when I locate one its gone within minutes..... I believe this diner was made as an add-on specifically for the Lake Shore Set which I own or the Silver spike -which I have the cars to but not the engines 8903/8904 . I have the Amtrak RDC budd car set. But would love to expand my collection
The Diner Car was a add on car to the Silver Spike Set as was the Combine Car.
The Lake Shore Limited add on cars where a extra Coach and Dome Car
If you notice the Lake shore car are painted in the Phase II scheme with the Red, White and Blue stripes along the window. The Sliver Spike Cars have only a Red and Blue stripe along the window which makes this car look like a Phase I paint scheme.
The Passenger, Baggage, and Diner cars were add ons to the Silver Spike set. These do turn up every now and then. I actually believe I saw one for sale at the Allentown show earlier this year. Good luck finding one.
Looks like there's a Lionel 16048 Amtrak diner up for auction right now at $.99 with no bidders as yet:

Just some additional information:
The Lakeshore Limited set was from way back in 1976. There was no diner shown as made for this set. The Silver Spike set was from 1988-98. The add-on diner (No. 16048) wasn't made until 1991. (This info from the Greenberg Guide)
I have the LSL set of 1976, and its add on cars. I also have those the bag, combo, and diner add ons for the second set above.
Don't know what it is about that set folks hate but I've seen it at every train show I've attended over the past 20 years. Call it massive overproduction.
On the other hand, IMO, Lionel missed the boat big time this year not reerecting a updated Corvette set with the arrival of the C-7.
As a big "vette" fan and Lionel into NASCAR, a set with these seven guys on flats would have been the no-brainer of the year.
BTW, I have an ad on the wanted to buy forum looking for the last set.

Today is you're lucky day.
Someone has the Amtrak diner you're looking for up for trade on the F/S or Trade Forum.
Don't delay.

Good luck.
Well, did you buy the one in the For Sale Forum? I might have the exact car you need. It's packed away in one of my totes from my repair business. Let me know as I do not want to go through the motions for nothing.

I imagine that instead of being overproduced it was a model of a very popular contemporary train that people could ride in most places in the US. A lot of people bought it and are selling because they have moved on to newer or bigger models.
I always speculated that the "pointless arrow" paint schemes were simply too dated to make much of an impression with these sets the last time they were offered. The 027 sets have never to my knowledge been made in a Phase III or IV scheme. (I know it's sheer fantasy, but so are the older-scheme sets)

(and it's still "elusive" )
A full set still goes for around $150 on ebay. There's the sliver spike set (1989 - 1990) where the diesel had dual motors; and there's the Lake Shore limited set (1976), single motor diesel. Becuase these are 027 and not O, they are perfect for the sharp O27 curve track and the 1122 switches. When I had my set, I put much brighter lighting in the 6 passenger cars using 2 clear white twinkle lights per car. Had to operate it with my 1033 tranformer since to give it extra power.
Here's another Silver Spike video (not mine)

I run my LSL cars with the MPC Amtrak F3 ABA and the F3 Preamble Express. Divide the power. One train with powered Amtrak on one, Preamble on the other. Then add one of the remaining dummies to each locomotive. I have run PE and Amtrak ABA on one train. Works, but to me it makes the train look overpowered.
The later "pinstripe" would be nice on these modern "2400's". Also, a blue and yellow VIA would have been nice.
How did you come to reply to a 5+ years old thread?
Dominic, Carl,
The timing of Dominic bringing this thread back to the front sort of surprised me. I just this week picked up sets of these cars for nostalgic reasons. I was searching the web to see what cars were made and stumbled on this thread a day ago. Realized that the cars I bought do not include the diner. I looked online and found a few listed for sale and ordered one. I was within minutes of resuscitating this thread myself!
I remember these cars for sale at my neighborhood hobby shop. Being about 10 years old at the time, I only managed to buy one coach to mix in with my Fathers green postwar originals. He was never too thrilled about the car mixed in with those classic cars but of course humored me during Christmas.
Although my focus these days is scale 3rail trains, the deal on a set of these and the nostalgia of them got the best of me. They will run on the floor central railroad with my other MPC and Menards equipment. I've cancelled selling my William's traditional Amtrak GG1 to pull these cars.
A VIA Rail ex CN "blue fleet" set of these would have been a terrific set! Neat idea. You could find some well worn cars cheap and have Christine Braden paint up a VIA blue set. She now has the correct colors and graphics after creating my 21" set for me.
I found my dining car on eBay only a few weeks after forum member bigtruckpete’s wife dropped a silver spike set off for me at O’Hare in Chicago. It was during a two hour wait for my next flight & TSA actually thought it was awesome that it was the only thing I had in my luggage.
I think I paid $35 for the dining car, which is a lot...but made it a complete set!
