All, I am thinking of purchasing either a Canadian National Genset or S-2 in legacy from Lionel.  Does anyone have any pics or video of the CN versions.  Also looking for info if the CN genset had the opening smokestacks the UP version has?  How is the pulling power of these engines?  Also opinions are appreciated.

Thanks

The new genset appears to be a single motored unit like my earlier NS model.  Although it only has one motor, I found it's pulling power to be excellent, and I was pulling 25 cars around, including a 2.5% grade in one section, and it had no issues.  I don't know if the single smoke unit version has the same features with the smoke from individual stacks, someone here was saying the new one didn't individually select the stacks.  I've never seen the new one in operation, only sitting in a display case.

Greg,

I think the only GENSET with opening smokestacks was the VISION LINE  UP. I have two GENSETS; a US Army and a BNSF. They are both good pullers, plus the sound is great!! Smoke comes out all three Smokestacks together.  They are not sequential, but they are great Engines. AND besides, the UP (with Opening Smokestacks) was sort of a hassle trying to keep the "FLAPPERS" free of gumming up. Had to soak them once in a while in something to free them up. I know, because I had one.

Actually, all the earlier Vision Line gensets has the three individual smoke units and the opening stacks.  Mine came with both the flappers and the straight stacks.  Since it has individual smoke units, they also run in conjunction with the engine sounds, and you can get smoke out of one, two, or all three stacks.  In the current production run, they went to the single smoke unit feeding all the stacks.

I agree that keeping the flappers working properly is a full time job, so I only put those on for show and tell, then I put the straight stacks on.   I wash the flappers in alcohol to free them up, but it only lasts for 10-15 minutes of running.
