What went wrong????
Did a wheel journal/bearing seize???
Peter (Buco Australia)
😯I don't know that I'd run up to a tank car that just went over.
I wonder if that pick up on the other side of the tracks was ok. That was crazy!!
Yikes. I hope no one was injured. Never seen anything like that before.
So I looked at the video on a larger screen and in slow motion. It looks to me that the rear of the train had already derailed and just caught up to that tank car as it entered the grade crossing.
If you have the time, watch the longer video of the train, a link to which is in the description. There's some drone footage of the train crossing a bridge a few hundred feet from that crossing. Sounds like some wheels might be hitting the ties, on a couple cars behind that tank car - or at least not properly on the rail. Jump to about the 15-minute mark.
Well, here's the longer one.

Around 2:50 in the original video you can hear a change in the sound (sounds like wheels on ties) though the cars in frame are fine.
could have been a lot worse. you can see the blue box car ahead of the tank is already off the rails
The brown boxcar on the bridge at 15:29 is down. If you watch the roof line against the background as it crosses the bridge you can see it bouncing rhythmically...on the ties.
Unfortunate as any derailment is, this one really was on the mild side...unless the contents of the tanker created a hazardous situation. After all, that boxcar could have taken a dive off the bridge moments before. And it looks like the recovery is going to be quite accessible for the clean-up crews and equipment.
Rather impressed with how quickly the train came to a halt, actually.
And, you're right, Ricko...I think I'd have tried to get the autos and occupants...esp. me and mine...away from that area ASAP !!

My first take-away from the video, however, was the fantastic cleanliness of the three units pulling 301!! Way to go, Lake State!! Beautiful! Sharp contrast to the 8-wheeled string of hoi polloi it was leading! Gorgeous Michigan day, too!
Ah, well, it happens.
Thanks Laz - That was crazy - Nothing on the news here.
OK...The more I think about this thread and the videos, the more confused I suddenly am. Maybe you all can help clarify...
The OP's first video I can understand...someone had set up a camera to watch this road crossing. Perhaps the crossing has been notoriously a PITA for Lake State for drivers taking a risk, challenging the absence of gates/flashers? Perhaps the township is looking to find the risk-takers through monitoring?...or trying to build a case for Lake State to install better alerts (gates/flashers) than just an ol' crossbuck? Seems like a rather busy crossing. 'Big Brother' is everywhere these days, I suppose.
But, then, the second video of train 301 is a major puzzlement to me. Why was it being so professionally captured...drone shots, focus on the Kawkawlin area. And why was that bridge just ahead of the road crossing so important to have the drone capturing so much of the train's content...and, more importantly, the portion of the train that eventually was the focus of this incident??? Why, it's almost as if the whole event was being 'staged'?????? Is it really an incredible case of serendipity??...a rare, expensive, capture of a random Lake State train, random day, freshly shopped/cleaned power, etc., etc., blah, blah????
I'm sure there's a logical explanation for all this 'event'??
Help me here, please.
KD
Forget the derailment--those locomotives look great! Awesome paint scheme!
For those who think this railroad’s deco is stunning, as do I, it was offered by…
…MTH through Dixie Union Station, and EZ Catch; don’t know if there’s any left.

Rail fans are more common than we realize and drones/decent cameras are more readily available at a lower price than they used to be? That's what I figure.
Gorgeous engines - love the paint scheme - and yes now that the seed has been planted it does have a “staged” feel to it - train stops quickly - people jump out of their cars - am I watching a movie ?
Of course easy to take this lightly - appears as though no one was hurt - hopefully
On the other hand probably silly to think something like this could be staged - is that a loaded center beam flat that derailed ? - how much does that clean up cost ?
