I started building this last night. A pretty easy kit with little painting which works well for me right now! A nice Nickle Plate Road 40 ft box. It is an early version that doesn't include the parts needed to convert these 2 rail kits to 3 rail. No wheels or 3r couplers. But I have a box full of 3r trucks so not a big problem. (no use telling RB trucks are not correct)

I used to buy these kit whenever I saw them....but they seem to be drying up a bit.

I did modify the frame/chassis from the highly detailed scale to something that works well with  3r trucks. Remved some details and most of the bolster. The trucks are Industrial Rail....I picked them as they are very heavy, I have a bunch on hand and they roll well.

It may get some weathering when I can get back to my airbrush and paint booth.

I do wish we had more kits in O scale. Something a little simpler than this Inter Mountain but still detailed enough. Kinda like a O scale version of a HO scale Athrean Blue Box kit with a bit more details. A fun fairly quick build that will look good in the 50's era setting.

PS.....before anyone tries to claim a bet that I couldn't pass up any more 40 foot house cars.......this was pulled from the stockpile. It had a Hobbytown USA 50% price sticker on it. $15......not sure what year I bought it......but I know these kits have been OOP for a long time. Didn't the tooling go to Atlas???

Thanks

You couldn't even give me a kit car by todays modern production standards.

I stay away from those odd ball items, too many surprises and labor time for me.

Right of way plus old Atlas Rico horn hook coupler cars too. Chassis and parts are not interchangeable with todays items..

Man we have come along way in "O" these days!

If I was building for others (profit) these would not be a good deal. Look under mine....looks like a mess with frame parts ground away. (I did sand and re-finish the frame....but I did gut it) I do ENJOY making something that looks decent and runs really well in the layout. Building or Re-building is part of what I enjoy.  Find any InterMountain kits in the stash....send them!!

excellent.  About 10 years ago a local hobby shop went out when the owner passed away. The owners children proceeded to sell off inventory on eBay. and when one of our club members won an auction and met the seller our club got an exclusive to a HOUSE FULL of trains. I got an MTH RK Mallet on the cheap as well as many other goodie. There was  PILE of Inter-mountain O-Scale kits which I had to pass on. No telling where the would up but if I ever come across some locally I'll keep you in mind

Very nice looking kit. I've got a pile of them, also. I doubt I could build one in an evening, though. Just getting the grab irons off the sprue taxes my nerves, not to mention gluing them on without getting glue all over the painted surface. Nicely done!

Modern cars are nice. I've got a set of Lionel Santa Fe reefers that look amazing with nice details. Something about them just screams "plastic", though. I guess since I started building wood 19th. century car kits, I'm getting picky. I've got a few "wood" cars from MTH, Atlas, and Lionel, and nothing looks more realistic than real wood, no matter how detailed or weathered they are.

While building this one I  realized I need to build what I have.....I am nearing the time those little parts will be beyond my ability too.  But still fun....if I hurry!

Everyone has their own deal. That kind of stuff just doesn’t work for me.

I was burned a couple of times buying it in the past and I just stick with OEM's to avoid issues and unexpected surprises.

No prob here.....I love weathered cars......and enjoy your work. thx

Dave looks great. I had done the same thing with a weaver car and IR tucks a long time ago. Now for the Intermountain. I actually have the 3R conversion kit(5). That being said Weaver trucks will work great with this kit and you can keep all the detail. Personally I am now addicted to the Intermountain kits as I enjoy building them.

Dave, the assembled car looks great, Intermountain Railway and Red Caboose had well detailed O Scale kits. I enjoyed assembling some Intermountain Railway boxcars, reefers, tank car and coal car kits and Red Caboose tank car and flat car kits. The most challenging of all of these for me was the Intermountain Railway coal hopper cars.
