I was doing some photo archiving the other day and notice photos of new locomotives arriving on the Northern Pacific... One of the major Test equipment cars that was essential to record their performance was a Dynamometer car.

Does any one make a kit, or build a car for us 3 railers?

Didn't 3rd Rail make one for the Jawn Henry they did?

The car was nearly constantly running behind the engine the whole time N&W was running it to the point that it seemed almost a part of the engine.

Regrettably 3rd Rail did not make one to go with the Jawn Henry. IMHO Scott Mann really missed an opportunity by not offering one with the 2300. A matching caboose would have been nice too.

They did make the auxiliary water tender. You are correct that it was used quite frequently with the 2300. It was built back in 1917 and was used with virtually every class of steam locomotive on the N&W. That would make it prototypical behind any scale N&W steamer built.

To my knowledge, to date it has only been made in H.O. I am hoping and praying that that will change before the end of this year.

Now to answer your question of why it hasn't been built yet. Typically, a railroad would have one, and no two of these were identical. For N&W fans it has been tough enough just trying to get a correct caboose, or two.

Walthers made a generic prototype that looked close enough for these railroads made around 1920. Plus I believe it actually had a needle that measured some fictitious traction effort?

I think these would be a close enough model for us 3 railers...

Guessing you didn't do a search on dynometer car.

Just received mine from Malcomb here on OGR forum.

Can you post some pics?

Actually, I did work closely on this with Malcom. The credit for building this is all his. He is a truly a gifted artist and I am eternally grateful. I am blessed with many talents, but the skill of crafting with styrene isn't one of them.

There were technical problems with the first one and Malcom started over again. The finished work is nothing short of incredible. I could not be more pleased. There are a handful of "stuff" on this earth that I hope to be able to cherish the rest of my life. This is one of them.

My contribution was only to take the time to locate and purchase the blueprints from the NWHS, send Malcom paint, decals, trucks (for my model only), and every picture I could lay my hands on off of the Internet. There is a whole thread on this on the 2 Rail Forum. See the link: Dynamometer

Cost? It was worth every penny, and then some. Malcom only built four. My Dad worked on the N&W 2300 from 1954-57. We lost him to cancer in 2006. This was the missing link to "Dad's" engine. This car means more to me than I can express. My only wish now is that he could have seen it.

I can imagine him now saying "Well, would you look at that! That's beautiful. Thank that fella Malcom for me, would you?"

The LHS has a 2 rail example in O that I basically ignored due to my lack of knowledge.  It's wooden construction and dual coupola design looked like a kitbashing idea gone seriously wrong.  Now that I've been schooled, I'll give it a respectful inspection on my next visit.  I'd prefer the Milwaukee Road version pictured here.
