I really like the new Lionel catalog; I believe it is packed full of goodies for everyone. As I kept looking through the catalog, I kept asking myself, is there anything …missing? Anything I wish they offered.
I love the variety they are offering in the starter sets, the licensed products (BATMAN, Scooby-Doo, Star Trek, etc) LC 2.0, and Scale items. The fantasy items like the Acela Polar Express and the Army UP-Veranda Turbines are really nice looking. I’m sure the light-up Christmas track will be a big hit, as it looks like a fun component to add under any Christmas Tree.
We have Plug Expand Play accessories to make it even easier for beginners to get up and running. We have Bluetooth everywhere, and we have LC App and LCS. Now they are offering Voice Control & Voice Streaming and Recording.
I also looked over the Lionel Control System comparison chart at the back of the catalog, and to be honest, I truly could not come up with any additional features I would really want. We have a steam whistle, swinging bells, etc, etc. ok, now what? I got nothing
But Is there anything they should/could offer that they aren’t that would have a big impact be a game-changer or fill a void? I’m not talking about paint colors, quality control or “X” road names on “X” model of Steam or Diesel or rolling stock. Lionel will build what will sell and rotate some items through every few cycles to keep things fresh, can’t make everyone happy, and I’m ok with that.
Below is a list of items/features I would like to see offered in the next catalog or two. And honestly, this was all I could think of, which is ....good.
What are your thoughts/suggestions?
- LionChief App with simultaneous multi-train control
- Legacy Base with Wi-Fi (& Bluetooth?) built-in
- Freestanding Legacy Base with Wi-Fi to use with LCS (no Cab 1 or 2 required) So you can use LSC without the need to buy a Legacy 990 set.
- LCS SensoTrack IR in LC2.0 trains, possibly LC as well). Ads to the “play value”
- Should the LCS and LC App start to merge into 1 platform?
- Incorporate “Gamification” into LC App. & LCS to make running the trains more interesting and fun especially for younger folks. This is now used by the two major Slot-car manufacturers Carrera & Scalextric. A model train version of this could include things like based on the Plug Expand Play accessories buy/add-on to your layout (the App either senses them automatically or you can add them in) you must interact with them.ie If you have a water tower or diesel station you must fuel up/add water at those accessories before you run out. Or be at a passenger station by a certain time or load/unload the logs or barrels. Weather conditions and grade can impact how you run/operate, must use certain announcements at certain times or use grade crossing signals when approaching one. Take a loco into the repair shop for new wheels/service etc. It works in slot cars, could add lots of play value here as you become the dispatcher (setting up the routes, loads, and conditions) and Engineer (running the train).
- Larger Radius Command Controlled Switches (ie O84 &O96) Should all switches be Bluetooth as well going forward? Would I use them, no, but I see other companies offer them and by not offering them some folks may choose to use a different track system.
- Signal System like Atlas O, currently Lionel only offers Crossing Gates, the other items are Post War size. This is long overdue in my humble opinion.
- A turntable or Engine Transfer Table (Yes, I know you can buy a third party one)
- Command Control for Trolley and other bump-n-go cars. With everything going LC, LC2.0, and Legacy, why have/offer items like these that are only conventional control/require a transformer
- Rechargeable Battery back in battery-powered G scale trains. In the last production of the G scale Polar Express you could buy a rechargeable battery pack to keep in in the tender. The latest production I believe has the 6 batteries now in the Loco. I Believe this was done to eliminate the tether between the loco and tender, which I assume was susceptible to breakage.
