NW-2 Switcher Diesel Engine With Proto-Sound 2.0 - New York Ontario & Western

Cab No. 116

Recently, I have been having issues with the engine named above.

First, I was running on a totally conventional layout and it would not run in conventional. It started up but would not respond  directional controls. The transformer was a KW.

I confirmed this on another conventional layout, this time using a Z-4000.

I tried DCS. The engine would only load as "unknown engine".

I did a full factory reset.

It does not result in restoration of the factory name in DCS nor would it run in conventional (even though it started up).

In DCS, it would accept a "name change" to O&W Swticher.  As you would expect with a full factroy reset, this "name change" does not survive and you go back to the previous "unknown engine".

a) fires up in conventional but does not respond to direction controls

b) loads via wifi as "unknown engine" and accepts the manually programed name of  O&W Switcher.

Any thoughts?

The engine was bought new fron JR Junction, 9 or 10 years ago and had worked flawlessly until recently. It used to identify itself as NYO&W 116..........then this happened. It was stored in its original box between Feb 2021 and Feb 2022 in a climate-controlled facility and I just took it off the shelf a few weeks ago......and, put it through a few rounds of testing  on four different layouts: two command layouts, one completely conventional and one that could be either/or (when in command, power is routed from Lionel bricks though the TIU and under conventional, the power goes through a Z4000 and has no contact with a TIU).

Does that change the thinking? It's never had its shell off.......does this mean the board may be bad?

That's odd, it looks like for some reason it lost it's marbles.  Does it run in DCS mode?  If so, I'd suspect the battery and you need to visit your favorite MTH ASC and have them reprogram the permanent name again.

Thanks, John

I will try that this week and report back. As you know, if its kidneys were sick, I would be fine dealing with it……this is sort of out of my league!
