A year or so ago I purchased two Jerry Snow Accurate O Scale drives on eBay to repower 1980's vintage Sunset ALCo PA1/PB1.  The drives are powered by Pittman gear head GM8724F217 motors via a toothed belt drive and are extremely smooth running.  The trucks, gearboxes, and frame are Overland/Ajin -  early production as they are set up for center tower through the fuel tank drives.  The much improved late production Overland/Ajin drives used a pair of truck mounted tower gearboxes.  I've attached photos of the Jerry Snow Accurate O Scale drive and the Sunset  body's I will be installing them in.

I'd like to consider repowering  a 1960's vintage USH/KTM GP-7 with a drive like Jerry's. Does anyone know if drive components are still available from Accurate O Scale.   My Google search showed Jerry to be the previous owner of  Accurate O Scale.   Contact info for either Jerry or Accurate O Scale would be appreciated.

Yeah, I do post here sometimes.  Actually, I have all the parts and build whatever Norm needs.   He doesn't stock any of it.   He wants me to move all of this to the new website I'm building.  He only shows P48 but I do regular O Scale too.

FWIW, there's somebody selling some of the Pittman gearhead motors from Jerry on ebay.

Jay

Ed,

I too can attest to the quality of the components Jay sells. They are top notch. He will also build you a complete running chassis (model) if you want him too. Jay uses a belt drive as well, but unlike Jerry's, it can be an above the chassis or below the chassis drive if you want to move away from the "tank drive" exposed drive shafts. Incredibly smooth and quiet and choices of gear ratios.

Also, I think the newer motors available today (Jay can supply these too) can be smaller and yet provide the same or better operation and pulling power.  They are gearhead motors like the older Pittmans Cockerham and Snow used in their repowers, but quieter and smoother IMHO; but we would expect that considering the technology improvements since the 80's and 90's.

Check out the Protocraft website as there is some great information there.

Jay - thanks for the lead on the motors

Bob - Mort Mann's Sunset Models  imported the PA's from Korea in the early 80's and for that era were solidly assembled (no cold solder joints!).  The bodies are nicely scale proportioned (nose is tapered), have good window contours, and feature see through grill/vents.  A Pittman 9314 motor powered all 6 axels through a center tower timing belt drive.  The drives were a little noisy so I jumped at the chance to pick up the Jerry Snow drives on eBay at what now seems to be a bargain price.   As was common in the 1980's, they came in unpainted.  A friend of mine, Jim Mucka,  did fantastic job on the painting and lettering.   I measured the current draw of the Jerry Snow drives  last night and it peaked nicely below 1.25A/unit so I'm going to install QSI Titan-U decoders running their ALCo 244 prime mover Q3 sound set.  Once they are broken in I'll post a video.
