This special-run MTH CNJ RS1 from @PATSTRAINS announced last April arrived yesterday.  I’ve heard and read over the years about what a great “bang for the buck” these RailKing RS1’s are, but never saw one up close until now.  All I can say is WOW!  The level of detail is so impressive for a R/K model.  Thanks Pat (and Walter, too, for your influence on these CNJ items!) for doing this special run!

I’ve owned a lot of MTH locomotives over the years.  You just don’t expect to see Premier-level details such as separately-applied wire (not molded-in!) grab irons and coupler cut levers, legible builder’s plates and detailed labeling/lettering on RailKing models.  Even the grab irons on the die-cast pilot are separately applied.

And according to Pat’s original announcement, there were only 15 of each of the two road #’s produced…so I feel fortunate to own one of them!

Of course it will be “3-rail scaled” and weathered at some point down the road when time permits.

Joe:

First of all...your photos of the RS-1 are great!

Received my 2 CNJ RS-1s yesterday and they are FANTASTIC. No CNJ modeler should be without one. Thank you. thank you to  Pat's Trains.

It looks that build plate is 2 decals, a black background and white lettering, misaligned. Wonder if they're all like that?

Joe, I hope you do your detailing and weathering magic sooner rather than later. I'd like to follow along. I saw what you did to your CNJ RSD4 ... awesome!!

And, folks ... as Joe and others have said, these RS-1s are really nice. We have an Atlas CNJ RS-1 from years back ... hardly a difference from these Railkings. The Atlas trucks may be a bit nicer, roller bearings. And, there is a chain hanging across one of the trucks to the brake cylinder. Thats about it.

I'm really happy I bought one from Patrick.

FYI- Nothing has ever changed on these RS-1's. They have always been a nice, highly detailed model for many years now.

Enjoy
