I have a custom painted D&H/Guilfor box car.  On the bottom is a label that says Custom 'O' Gauge - John & Lucille Sikorsky.

Can anyone tell me anything about them or where this car might have come from.  I'm wondering what kind of price to put on it to sell.

I don't think it would be worth much. In the years these cars were made there were a lot of custom paint jobs being done. Me included. My guess it would be worth more if they hadn't weathered it. It's not a very good job and there's rust on parts of the car. Don't expect much even if you could sell it. May be wrong but I don't think so. Don

John was a dealer for Frank’s Roundhouse back in the early 1990’s.  Although your car has some custom “weathering” this was not a custom car but a regular production box car identified as Frank’s Roundhouse stock #21.  John purchased many different cars from Frank’s Roundhouse either without trucks or with plastic trucks, added or replaced the original plastic trucks with die-cast sprung trucks before reselling which was as far as I know the extent of his customizing.

This car was also produced with 3 other road numbers (27053, 27073 & 27050).

For more information on Frank’s Roundhouse see Forum Member robertstrains.com website.  Following is a link to the FRH section of his website: http://www.robertstrains.com/Frank.htm

Sorry to hear of John's passing.

They were regular table holders at the Albany NY train shows as well as others in the NY, CT, MA area. John and Lucille lived in Kerhonkson NY during this time period. Good people.

As stated, they always had a large assortment of Frank's Roundhouse freight cars.

Too bad that the poor weathering destroyed that car. Otherwise, it would have been a popular item around here, as is most D&H rolling stock (although some may have avoided it due to the Guilford logo! ).

Thanks to all who participated in the chat about this car.  Last night I put it on Ebay with a buy-it-now of $9.00, and it sold this morning.  Lokks liek I should have asked for $15.00.  The art of pricing on Ebay provides many challenges.

In regard to Jack Sikorsky, I wish I had noticed that one as the name would have rung a bell.  It's the first time an obit on any list has been someone I'd even heard of.

And that brings up another question.  I haven't been able to figure out how to search for something like that on this forum.. Can someone give me some advice on searching ?
