I just did this on my F-3 Kadee#745 or it's 800 series counterpart
Clem
Kadee #806 short-box/short shank or #743 short box/short shank. I used the 743's on my MTH F7's, GP35's, C44-9W's and a Sunset 44-tonner. Perfect fit. The C44-9W's can negotiate 36" radius (O-72) with scale wheels and scale cars in tow. I was worried that with the short shanks there wouldn't be enough swing or slack for this but they work well. They actually center a bit better than the 804/805's and 740/745's with the longer shanks and boxes. I've decided to use them instead of cut-down 805 boxes on locomotives.

That's really interesting Matt. I had an MTH scale wheel SD50 that I put 806's on and it wouldn't even come close to 36"r coupled to anything. It would yank cars right off the track. I guess each model is different.

That's true. If I recall correctly, the SD50 Is sligtly longer than a C44-9W and has a longer truck wheelbase. A cut-down 805 might work because of the longer swing (also depends on the swing on the attached car). Unfortunately, it's a trial and error process. In my case, lots of errors.
