How does the cover come off to allow access to the mechanism?

Usually you have two philips head screws that are painted black that need to be removed to get the housing off, remove the two screws then lift up on the end, then there should be two silver color screws that hold the position indicator in, pull it straight up. If it is a remote control there might be more to take apart.
These can be taken apart while still on the layout.

No screws apparent. The plastic cover must
snap off somehow...or there's another
trick...hmmmm
There are two kinds of K-Line 042 switches - the old style with a large plastic housing that sticks up, and the newer style that has a flat profile. It would help if you specify which switch you have.
I see. Thank you for that. It must be the older
style : plastic housing covers mechanism, and "sticks
up" from base of switch. I figure the cover snaps off
somehow.
Oh Ffffreddd, I think you can help me...
Are you still out there?....
