K-Line 6 wheel passenger cars and replacing wheel sets

Why would you need wheelsets replacements in the first place? You have run these cars over a million actual miles?

I wonder would the K-Line freight car wheels work ?

I do not know about the 6 wheel trucks but I have a few of the 4 wheel passenger car trucks and it looks fairly easy to me as just removing a few screws and the trucks will come apart. If the 6 wheel trucks are built the same way I would only remove the screws from one side. Take off the side frame, replace the wheels and put it back together. Hope this helps.

The 6 wheel trucks are as Mark described. Unless there is a groove cut into the wheels you can clean them up with a tooth brush and mild dishwashing soap.

If you really need replacements, how many trucks are we talking about ? I might be able to help.

Zinc pest  why replace the wheel sets?

The outer wheel sets can be replaced by spreading the side frames.  Do NOT try this with the middle wheel set.

You have to cut the axle midway and splice with a brass round rod moved from one side to cover both sides, glued in the middle.

I too would  want to see what these "worn out " stamped steel wheels look like.

Take a good look at the side frames and coupler parts as well. There was an early batch of these parts that have zinc pest. But not all the early ones have it. I have several sets of these cars, and it is very hit or miss. It seems to affect the initial offering of 3 cars more so than the later add on cars. Lionel did have a supply of extra parts made for these cars. I don't know if they still have them or not.

I have  hundreds of K-Line passenger cars running on the layout.  I have never seen a wheel worn through.  Show us a photo if this situation exists as I do not believe this.    Anyone got a photo???   I have never had to replace wheels.
