How did the motors go bad?

(The motors are probably the cheapest and easiest parts to find)

I'm not a tech, but I believe that you could wire the lights a smoke unit directly to track power, but you wouldn't have any control over them. You may want to wire in a switch at least to the smoke unit, and possibly a resistor also depending on the voltage you use for your track power.

 The horn would probably need a TMCC board of some sort to sound. Yould would want to at least cut the wires to the motors, if they are bad, and also remove any gears neccessary for the locomotive to roll freely.

Again, I'm not a tech, but those are educated best guesses,

Is this a AC motor unit or DC can motors?  To spin freely you need to remove the motors if DC can, or pull the armature if AC motor.  G

they are can motors,Rob,do not know how they burned out,was given to me and they did nt know.smoke unit and horn still work.not worried about horn ,just smoke unit, running tmcc 18 v.run dorect track power,what size resistor would be recommended.

On most conventional engines the smoke unit, lights and sound are independent of the e unit. They should work normally even without the motors. k-line conventional e units are known to fail. Are you sure its just not the e unit and not the motors? Check the thread on buying broken trains. I fixed a k-Line engine with a Wiliams e unit. You could use one from any DC motored modern conventional engine. Its unlikely both motors are burned out.
