Typically tender shells are easy to remove - 4 screws, or so - open it up and look.

MTH electronics are battery-dependent; others are not. If it is a TMCC (or other Lionel-style electronics) loco you don't need a battery at all. In this (non-MTH) system the battery (alkaline only)

is merely used to retain the sounds when the track voltage falls below 8v. (I think) in

conventional operation.

Not sure where to get instructions, but they are around. Maybe someone here will send you a copy.

If you have a manual for any K-Line steamer, you have the manual for the GS-4.  K-Line did not have specific manuals for locomotives, they had generic ones.  They had one for steam, and one for diesel (Which is what they out in with electrics.).  And then there was a TMCC insert.

One time I took photos of one of the sets and posted them for someone here, a search might help you with that.

I have the TCA version of that engine and found out that in addition to the steam whistle, it has a loud horn that really sounds cool.  I think it was button #6 on the TMCC but don't remember for sure because several years ago I had to have it repaired so also had it converted to DCS.  Maybe someone else knows about it if you don't already.
