I was not able to to attend York this spring, however I was still able to enjoyed my new cars I acquired from Atlas this week. A fellow forumite brought his Lionel E-5's over my house and we put them to good use pulling the latest cars around the layout.... good times...

I thought Burlington E5 units had fluted stainless steel sides, in order to match the passenger cars in the train.

Great looking train anyway.

Well that's nice, some pictures  to enlighten us?

Any who, this is Lionel's rendition of their E-5... have to live with what you got.

Try the Illinois Railway Museum site, as they have the only fully operational E5A in the world.

Just great. I assume they were pretty expensive too.

One more pose of the E-5A.

Patrick Treadaway photo:

In Karl Zimmerman's book, CZ, The Story of the California Zephyr, there is one publicity photo of an E-5AB powering the CZ.  It was a rare instance.

There were various reasons why CB&Q chose F's for power, but the E-5 was the perfect match for that train.

If I ever collect a full set of CZ cars, and IF an accurate E-5 is ever manufactured in 3RS (which it has not), I will power it with E-5's.  That is a lot of "ifs".

Actually the CB&Q really didn't "choose" those A-B-A F unit sets. Since the CZ was a joint effort between the CB&Q, the D&RGW, and the WP, the CB&Q wrongly assumed that each railroads sets of motive power, i.e. all F units required for the mountains, would run all the way through from Chicago to Oakland. When the CZ actually went into revenue service, both the WP and the D&RGW changed-out the motive power so that THEIR units pulled THEIR portion of the route.

The CB&Q realized that their own A-B-A F units wound up not being "required", so the CB&Q quickly ordered additional E7A units. This silver painted A-B-A sets of F units, lasted less than one year in passenger service, as the CB&Q reassigned them to freight service after removal of the steam generators and gear ratio change.

but the E-5 was the perfect match for that train.

You would be just as correct with an E7A-E7A-E7A consist, or even E8A-E7A-E9A consist also, depending on the time frame you desire to model. In addition, remember that the only E type B units the CB&Q ever owned, were the E5B units. They never had any E7B, nor E8B, nor E9B units on the roster.

I bet those beautiful Sunset/3rd Rail CB&Q E7A units would look fantastic hauling the CZ!

Interesting what you learn on the forum, thanks for the knowledge bomb....

hmm E7A's from 3rd rail you say....

I had already started working on a pair of Williams CB&Q E7A units, for my Golden Gate Depot heavyweight CB&Q passenger train, when Sunset/3rd Rail announced their E7 units.

Here is what my CB&Q E7A units look like now, after custom detailing and correct painting.

Those "skirts" didn't last that long, as they got in the way of maintenance personnel working on the trucks. Adding those "skirts" to an O SCALE, 3-Rail model would DRASTICALLY limit the curve negotiation.

As I previously stated, they are William E7A models, that have been custom detailed & painted by my long time buddy, Gene. The second A unit is also powered with the Williams "dummy powering kit", and wired in reverse. Thus, when the TMCC eng address is entered BOTH units respond and run forward at the same time (they were up-graded to ERR TMCC 'Cruise Commander' control).

For those of you who bought these cars, did you purchase a mixture of road names to make up your consist or did you purchase one road name. I bought all CB&Q. I am missing the first two cars. I started late. My power is the Lionel CB&Q scale F3. I am interested in obtaining the first two cars in any road name. Hope to find a Lionel CB&Q that is affordable one day . I passed on one for $750.00 that was mint

Please don't confuse the above photos of Atlas SCALE California Zephyr passenger cars with ANYTHING that Lionel ever produced for this spectacular train.

I take it your talking about the F3 sets that you passed on for 750.00.

No worries there are others out there. I like Hot's approach and building a more appropriate set from the Williams E7's.

If you are missing Atlas cars from the earlier releases, don't panic, they are out there. I saw the domes in the 3 rail version sell on the bay for around a buck and a half last week.

I have a DRGW diner on my consist and if its not prototypical I am not concerned. Allot of passenger trains used consist out west in a "pull car" type operation.

The Northern Pacific would pull and drop cars as necessary as they went out west. Thus when they got to their destination in Spokane or Seattle the consist could be mixed with CB&Q coach and sleeper cars as well.

No, the Burlington E5 I passed on was the mint original from 2001. I think it was on ebay for a while last year. I kept waiting for it to come down. Sometimes you miss that way. Not the first engine I missed out on and probably will not be the last. "What is meant for you will not Pass you by". I am a Lionel /American Flyer guy except for these cars and their track. I have tried Williams and MTH in the past

Got ya, well the Lionel E5's are nice but they are NOT worth 750.00.

You just have to wait and be patient.

I believe I saw these go for 300.00 at one time... just did not have the money to buy them.

Pick and choose your battles I always say...

Besides I just purchased an A-B-A WP F3's and will probably do another photo shoot and we can talk about how in accurate and over priced they are now.

I am sure somebody will jump on this because it is a guess, however this is what I believe Atlas is going to make for the CZ set:

- baggage
- dome-coach
- dome-coach with conductors window
- dome-coach
- dome-lounge?
- diner
- 6/5 sleeper (delivered in 1952 - one for each of six train sets)
- 10/6 sleeper
- 10/6 sleeper
- 16 section sleeper
- 10/6 sleeper (transcontinental)?
- dome-observation

I purchased the following:
(2) dome coaches
10/6 sleeper
16 section sleeper
diner
dome observation

the 6/5 sleeper is out, but I have not purchased yet.

the conductors dome coach and baggage is due out next year.

You can find the earlier releases you just have to watch the bay for them or ask some Hobby shops if they still have them.

More photos of my Key Model Imports E5's. These units rarely if ever were used on the CZ. They were used on the test consist as seen below my late friend David Van Droonon's dad took these in early 1949. These were also Phase II E5's. (C) David Van Droonon

The late Red Nose era E5's are a better pick for your CZ if you insist on E5 power up front on train 1. By the time the CZ was in regular service ample supply of the faster accelerating E7's and E8's were on hand. The E5 is in my opinion the definitive Zephyr design and power however they were first generation units.

By 1949 the E5's lost the skirting for Hot Water's explanation and they also fell off.
