Is there an alpha-dog on your layout? This is the engine that stomps around the layout and pretty much owns it. When it's on the layout all of the other engines either bow down or work to serve that engine. Challengers occasionally show up that are longer, louder and more expensive but rarely unseat the king. On my layout it's the PS3 Imperial S2 6-8-6 Turbine show below at the station. Was pretty sure a recently acquired PS3 UP FEF 4-8-4 Northern (second photo) would take over but in the end it's still the S2.

To be frank, the big guys stumble around like bulls in a China shop on my layout: I have scale Big Boy, EM-1, Allegheny, Challenger, etc, and track wide enough to take them, but them look out of place, with rather silly looking stick out up front,  etc., and they tend to collect trees, etc., I keep planting to near the track as they chug around the layout.

The Alpha on my layout, the light heavywieght can beat the superheavywieghts, is my ATSF 2900.  I have took the body off an old MTH PS1, and mounted it on the chassis from a Legacy 3751 (the drivers, wheelbase, etc., were the same size).  The result is an incredibly handsome loco a bit bigger than the 3751s or any other non-articulated steamer, yet not so big it sticks out on curves too much.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. But my pic does have the ultimate King Kong of my layout, along with my scale King Kong..........The 4014 Union Pacific Big Boy!

Pete

I figured someone would have a real King Kong but not nearly that good. Well done!
