Hi. I'm new to this forum, and I want to start off by saying that I've been looking into doing custom-built Lionel Trains for myself, since I've seen photos of impressively custom-built Lionel engines and cars. I've got a Lionel Rio Grande Berkshire engine for Christmas yesterday and a Marx NYC caboose that I picked up from Great Lakes Train Store a few years ago that I both want to turn into a DT&I Berkshire and DT&I caboose.

The few problems are that I've never been able to kit bash engines and cars in different shapes before, and Lionel has never made actual engines that are based on the real engines themselves. Plus, Paul Grimmel of the Chi-Town Union Station in Commerce Township says that kit-bashing is more for 2-rail O-Gauge trains than 3-Rail O-Gauge trains. But, I'm willing to give it a shot. What are the tools and strategies I need to do to turn my Rio Grande Berkshire into a DT&I berkshire?

Andrew, You can kitbash just about anything you want. I'm kitbashing a LTI Chessie Steam Special currently. This is a labor of love and I will never get my money out of it, but it's what I like to do. Yes, use Precision Scale, but just don't order one part at a time. Plan ahead for your order. Shipping will just kill ya. Take your time, Patience is a venture when kitbashing.

Heres a few examples that I've completed.

I plan on starting on the top of the boiler hopefully sometime this winter.
