I’d like to put together a perfect late 40’s early 50’s Western Pennsylvania unit coal train in scale 3 rail. The road name could be PRR, B&O, Bessemer, P&LE or another Western PA road name. What are your suggestions? It is kind of easy to figure out what locomotives and cabooses are appropriate, but I’m not exactly sure what kind of hoppers fit the era and place best. My best guess would be 2 bay ribbed, but I'm not sure. I searched the forums but I could not find anything specific. I would appreciate your suggestions and any pictures you might have of real or modelled coal trains from this place and era. Many thanks. David

Farwest,

I have memories of the Pennsy during the 50's.  I remember double or even triple headed steam, probably decapods, laboring with a long coal drag from the curve just west of Manor,PA heading down the straight away past Westmoreland City,Biddle, and Shafton and on to Irwin.  Maybe there were L1's or a heavy Consolidation in the mix.  The consists were long, slow and noisy.  I recall lots and lots of black hoppers, probably H-21 class.  There was always a tuscan cabin car.  Later on the F units took over, then Sharks,Erie Builts, etc.  Once steam was gone you never knew what would head up a train.
