As layout construction is getting closer, need a little help, and got several questions.

First of all, who has the best book and/or dvd on bench construction.  I've been trying to think of a name all week and had a brain lapse.  Learning vast amounts of knowledge from our group, trying to make every move count, and being as close to right the first time.

Secondly, what thickness of plywood do you use for the base of your layout.  In my area, we have Lowes, Home Depot, and locally owned Cleveland Lumber (highest quality, higher on cost, but great people) for plywood sources.  High grade, smooth 3/4 inch as Lowes is north of $50.00.  There is 1/2 inch, relatively smooth (sanded?), no knots on top side, but mid $30.00 range.    Then we have MDF which looks great, smooth, mid $30.00 price range.  Draw back from MDF is reports of formaldehyde (I call it embalming fluid and eating enough salt to take care of that) used in manufacturing process.  Lastly there is partical board which is priced in the $18.00 range but nearly as durable, and really must be protected as I know what will happen if moisture gets close.  Unless someone has some really good points, partial board not an option as this time.

Need all the suggestions I can get.  Got the thia peoject on the go as more people have found out about the trains and wanting to see them.  And some say the hobby is dyeing.  Not yet.

I used 5/8 particle board, which is working great.  If you have good support under your plywood, you can probably use 1/4 inch although most will use 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood.  MDF is a great material, however, it is heavy in full sheets.  Do you plan to put homosote or something else over the plywood?

As to a name or book etc, I have built enough items that I just built mine with 1x4s and used 24inch spacing.  It is plenty strong.

I would use 1/2" plywood with 1/2" homasote over top.  You don't have to buy the best grade of plywood.  Remember you will be covering it with the homasote.  I feel that particle board does not hold screws as well as plywood.  As for the frame work, I would keep the cross pieces no farther apart than 16" on center to support the plywood.

The Linn Westcott book "How to build model railroad benchwork" is great.  Look for a used version.

Use 1/2 inch.  It's plenty.  If you space support boards 16" apart you can jump up and down on it.  3/4 inch is a waste of money and completely unnecessary.

Forget Homosote.  It is way too expensive.  I have used a black colored insulation board available in an 8 x 4 sheet from Menards that accomplishes the same thing as the homosote does for about 1/3 of the price.
