It seems to me that the cars appreciate in value for about a year or two after they are released (sometimes getting ridiculous in price) and then they go back to what similar cars in other paint jobs go for on the secondary market.

I haven't bought a club car yet (will probably get the convention car in a few weeks), but I still feel the LCCA is a great club to belong to. If a car or two end up on my layout because of the club, that's just a bonus.

Folks used to say: anything made as a collectable will never be (a collectable).

Historically, most collectors have shied away from special run club cars.

The prices realized for many trains has been dropping, not going up.

But there are folks that like them.

The best advice has already been given: buy what you like, don't buy as an investment.

I buy ONLY the ones I want badly enough to pay the issue price, which includes a substantial markup to support the organization. In recent years, my only LCCA purchases have been the Milwaukee Road express reefers, which have gone way up in value for some unknown reason, and the Robin Hood Beer double sheathed boxcar, which has held value at near issue price but not appreciated. Both items were worth it to me because they are specific items I collect, not because I'm interested in selling.
