The 990 will control TMCC locomotives.  You need to know the engine's I'd.  If not switch the loco to PRG; turn on the power; using the 990, press ENG, the number you want and press SET.  Turn off the power and set the loco back to RUN.  You should now be able to control it from the 990.  Using INFO on the 990 you can and or alter the details of the loco.

I'm pretty disappointed in the LCS, I have zero plans on investing in an iPhone, so having the locomotive control seems out of the question.  At least MTH made the platform available on the most popular phone operating environment, I don't know what possessed Lionel to restrict it to Apple!  Makes me wonder how long LCS will actually be improved...

Success!  Now on to another question...  where the heck is the smoke output control on the iPad LCS app?

There isn't any. LCS app isn't really the best app to run locomotives.

Is there a better app I should consider?

LCSiPad app was primarily designed as a Layout Control with minimal engine control.  It was aimed at switching operations by way of the operation mode that allows forward and reverse operation with centering.

iCab is more geared towards engine operations.  The downfall of that is it's IMO overly priced at $49 and if you want Android is not available in that platform.  Other alternatives are High Rail app $9.99 from Brian Coyner (iDevice only) and eTrain console (approx $30) and it's Android app.  Both much less expensive. The High Rail currently only runs Legacy Engines though but has a nice interface and takes advantage of the 3D touch of the newer iPhones.  Both allow remote control of the Sensor Tracks.

The LCS app isn't designed or intended to be operated on the phone it is intended to be a tablet app ans as such not available for the other guys phone or even my iPhone. You cant actually get the LCS app on your iPhone as the software will not allow you to install it. The iCab however can go on both the phone and the iPad

although android has a lot of market share, I believe apple still has the most when it comes to Tablets, which is what the LCS app was target at.  As for the iCab app, which I think is also only Apple, perhaps that had to do with studies showing people are more willing to pay for an app on an Apple device.  Just guessing of course I have no really idea.

i don't have any issues with them support Apple devices as I own them, but it's always nice when more people can join the party.

The iCab App, but it costs $50. It can be loaded onto as many Apple devices as you own. I have it on four, so it works out to about $12.50 per controller for me.

Still at $49 dollars is pretty steep without even a "free" version to give it a test run.  IMO MTH did it correctly by having a multiple tier system and capped it at $24 and change.  Not that my opinion holds a lot of weight, but I did tell Lionel folks at York of my opinion.

Probably a dumb question, but is LCS a requirement to be able to use the iCab, High Rail or eTrain apps or can those three apps be run without the LCS app? And can the three above apps do what LCS does so you don't need LCS, or do you still need it in addition to the other apps for it's specific functions?

Then there is all the added Lionel devices that I have no idea as to which ones I would need? I think Lionel seems to really over complicate this stuff where MTH just has one app and one wifi device, much simpler, IMO. All I have now is a Legacy 990 system, which I like and it's pretty easy to use. Probably odd, but I actually like having the two separate Lionel and MTH systems, kind of a change of pace switching between remotes. The systems themselves are fine, it's all the add on devices for the Legacy system and when/what you need for what feature that is confusing to me.

All that is needed beyond the 990 system to use the iCab app to run trains is the LCS wireless module and its power supply and cable.

I went way beyond that and control my entire layout with the LCS. I have 36 of the assorted LCS devices to do it. I actually prefer the Cab 2 handheld for running the trains. I use an iPhone with the iCab app but prefer the Cab2. The LCS mimic displays on the iPad work well to operate all the devices and accessories on the layout.

Thanks, I agree with you on the remote operation vs the apps. I don't have any of Lionel's wireless stuff, but I have the MTH wifi and deluxe app. So far I still prefer the DCS remote. I will be trying to use the app more to see what happens, gotta give it a chance I guess. I do have the LCS app on my iPad, but I don't have anything that it will control on my layout. I don't have my whole layout controlled with either system. I find I still prefer the switch controllers I have installed near the switches on the layout. Guess I am just old fashioned...
