Great instructions tinman, but not everyone wants to start soldering and modifying wiring etc, so for those who want a screw in solution LED, you can use these LED bulbs:

Sorry I said top hat diodes, the correct term is straw hat, around 5 cents apiece currently on eBay. I believe I computed the total cost of a switch conversion was about $1.50. mostly because the grommets are expensive. If you don't care about the same empty space the normal light bulbs have, you can drop the cost to about a buck.
