Start at All Electronics and have a look-around for some ideas.
They might have some good deals, but they're pretty expensive on these.

Hi John! Never used LEDs but after following the discussion it sounds like a conversion of the passenger cars is a good idea. I did check out the sites you identified and the price is certainly reasonable. This may be a stupid question, but how difficult is the conversion of a typical MTH passenger car?
Dan
Its actually very simple Dan, a typical car only requires a strip of the LED's and four components if you're running strictly command. The only one that adds a bit of complexity is the observation car is they have markers or drumheads you want to light, it takes a couple more components.
Once you do one or two, it'll take you more time to take them apart and put them back together than to do the lighting upgrade.
I use Evan Design for most of my LED projects. Simple installation and a quality product with a vast selection of LED's. I highly recommend them.
Chris, putting 20 or more Evans LED's in an 18" passenger car for even lighting would be pretty expensive, not to mention labor intensive. It's far easier to put the strip of LED's in and put a few components to drive them. You can also adjust the intensity of the lighting with a single component.
I know some folks here think they're the bee's knees, but they're not the only way to do lighting projects, or for that matter, even necessarily the best. One size doesn't always fit all.
