Hello everyone.

Just got off the phone with Lionel to get a r/a number to send my legacy 990 back for upgrade since its still the 1.0 version. After reading the form they emailed me, they asked that you send the original sales receipt from a authorized Lionel dealer you purchased it from. Do they need this receipt? I have looked for it and cannot find it anywhere.  Also, would it be a good idea to send just the base and remote or should I box everything up and send it all? I guess I should have ask this when on the phone but the lady seemed eager to move on from my call.

I am more concerned about not having the receipt because and I quote from the e-mail:

"When returning a product to the Customer Service Department for repair you must write the RA number boldly on the outside of the package near the shipping label. If the RA Number is not placed on the package it may delay the repair and return of your product. You must also enclose a copy of the original sales receipt from an AUTHORIZED LIONEL DEALER. Please enclose an envelope with a detailed note explaining the problem you are having, a copy of the dated original sales receipt AND your daytime contact number (in the event a technician needs to speak to you). FAILURE TO ENCLOSE THIS INFORMATION MAY RESULT IN YOUR PRODUCT BEING RETURNED WITHOUT REPAIR or worse, not returned at all!"

If you are that worried about it, call them and explain that there is no way you are going to find the original receipt (whatever the reason may be - bought it 6 years ago, etc).

At the worst case, they would not likely refuse the repair, but may ask you to pay something for it.

Considering the nature of this upgrade (design error that caused it to need to be returned to Lionel the first time), it's unlikely Lionel will not work with you.

While it's standard procedure for any warranty return, its in Lionel's best interest for you to have a functional Legacy set so you can confidently buy more Legacy engines.

I think the lawyer words about not returning the item is more to cover the case of people that are foolish enough to send something with no contact info (or RA #) whatsoever.  It's hard for Lionel to return something to a customer that they can't identify!

Thanks guys. I pretty much figured it wouldn't be an issue of not having the receipt but there was that lingering thought so I guess it's better to ask.

I wanted to just drive over there since I live fairly close instead dealing with the hassle of shipping. I called to make an appointment with the service dept. because I have a K4 that needs smoke unit repairs but they said they are generally not open to the public. From what was explained to me, the first upgrade to the legacy base and controller has to be done by Lionel.(version 1.0) I was told that after this upgrade performed by them that all future upgrades I will be able to do myself.

When the repair department was in Chesterfield I was able to make an appointment and drive over to deliver any repairs.  It is too bad they are no longer 2 miles from me.

As for the wording in the email about having to have the original receipt I believe it is just standard wording that is sent out in every email for a warranty return.  The lady who  I spoke too said they are repairing legacy systems out of warranty for pretty much the life of the legacy system.

My #990 is also in for repair. The direction button packed up. I guess it will also get the charger update.  I could not find the receipt, it has been at least 3 years since purchase.

£69 to ship back to USA Ouch.

I got out my old TMCC base and the DCS/TMCC cable I bought about 2 years ago and have never got round to using. Works pretty good.

My question what in the world have you been doing with it all these years that you are still running 1.0.  geez

I bought my #990 about a year ago. Not knowing to much about all this new stuff I was like a kid in a candy store when I picked that up and my first legacy K4 steamer.  Since joining this forum I've learned a lot, and Patrick H has helped me tremendously also with his knowledge and experience. Since I now have a few legacy steamers and a couple Vision Line products, I wanted to dive in and try to learn more about the #990 and it's features. That's when I realized mine is way out of date. HAHA! Sometimes being late for the party is a good thing. I'm learning the do's and don't from you guys and I thank you for it

Wow man, that sucks. Shipping is expensive. That's why I wanted to just take my things directly over to Lionel in Canfield OH. I could be there in about 1 hour. At least you have a backup system and can still enjoy some features.

Think I'll send it in for an upgrade as well.

I have not even started my layout yet. I'm still on 5x8 plywood covered with carpet just to run some things and enjoy them. This spring and summer will be the big clean out and paint of the garage for the new train room.  Don't forget to call Lionel to get a R/A number. (586-949-4100)

Lionel has had a pretty quick turnaround as of late.  I had a problem regarding my Legacy 990 set and a smoke unit problem on my Dash 9.  The Service Department fixed both problems in about a week.  Can't say enough good things about them.  Hope your turnaround is as pleasant

I had a keypad failure on my remote a few weeks after I got my set about a year ago.  They replaced the remote with a working one (unfortunately my brand new remote was replaced with a very obviously used and dirty repaired one, which is my only gripe) and sent it back less than a week after they received it.  It spent more time in the mail than it actually spent at Lionel.  Haven't had any issues since with it.

I just got my 990 back on Friday 28th. Updated the software to 1.52, updated the charging system and installed new batteries, and they replaced the direction button.

I also picked up a USB serial adapter and downloaded the Legacy System Utility software to my laptop. Very very cool! Aside from the 5 week turnaround, very pleased.
