My wife gave me a used Legacy GP-7 Santa Fe engine (6-28598) for Christmas (I know, how thoughtful!) and it runs great but the sound won't make a peep.  I've tried it under Legacy (v1.0) control, TMCC control, and conventional control to no avail.  Under Legacy control I've changed it's address number several times, done a reprogram/reset using both the AUX1 code 2 and AUX PROG code 2, increased volume, decreased volume, etc.  I've adjusted the potentiometer internal to the engine to several different positions and still no sound.  I took the shell off the engine to look for any obvious problems and found a loose connector and what I thought could be a shorting wire on the railsounds switch, but fixing these didn't fix the sound.  Also tried to clean up excess smoke fluid the best I could but that didn't change anything.

From other posts I've read I'm concluding that the sound board has failed and I'll need to get a new one, but I wanted to make sure there's nothing else to try or tests to isolate the problem.  I don't have another working sound board to try in this engine.  I'm pretty sure the speaker is getting power as I hear the familiar railsounds hum when I dial up the track power, and I also hear the speaker hum change when I adjust the potentiometer with track power applied at 18V.  Any suggestions?  As I mentioned earlier everything else works fine including the startup button, adjusting smoke volume, engine reset, engine stop, speed buttons, etc.  Just no sound for either horn/bell or any of the sound related keys.

Did you reseat the Power Supply board and the R4LC too?  I would also measure the resistance at the volume control.  Center to ends should change from 0 ohms to 10K ohms.  If not and you can't get 0 ohms the volume pot may be bad.

Of course the speaker can be bad, I have seen several of those failures in the low end Trainsounds engines.

If everything checks out, you are at the point of swapping out components.  G

Yes, reseated all three boards.  The pot checked out ok and the speaker was 9.8 ohms which was a little high but should still work as I understand things.  I called Lionel and talked to a tech and they say it sounds like either the power board or the sound board, so I got a RA number to send them in to check.  We'll see what they find.

Please let us know how it turns out and what they find.
